Recap / Darkwing Duck S 1 E 30 Toys Czar Us

Go To

When Gosalyn gets into trouble at school again, Darkwing becomes obsessed with becoming the perfect parent - even giving up his crime fighting career to raise her right! At the same time, Quackerjack cranks up his antics by kidnapping children to create a kingdom of toys so he can finally share his dangerous creations with them.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Affectionate Nickname: Towards the end, Darkwing starts calling Gosalyn "slugger".
  • Artistic License – Economics: Quackerjack's plan involves making kids work in his factory, then paying them so they can buy his toys. Even the kids point out how roundabout and pointless the arrangement would be. Quackerjack is insane, after all.
Honker: Why work for money to buy toys? Why not just make our own toys?
Tank: Why doesn't that jerk just keep his money and call it even?
    Quackerjack: Bookkeeping!
  • Brick Joke: Gosalyn makes the mistake of calling Darkwing fat while trying to help the kids escape. Later on, after he swallowed Quackerjack's deadly inflatable toy, he laments that he is fat.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Gosalyn's baseball knack manages to knock out Quackerjack before he can kill her and Darkwing.
  • Damsel in Distress: Gosalyn is kidnapped by Quackerjack along with her friends
  • Deadpan Snarker: On learning her dad is reading a book about creating a wholesome environment, Gosalyn says it must be a science fiction book.
  • Didn't Think This Through: When parents refuse to buy his toys on account of them being too hazardous to children, Quackerjack decides he'll just sell his merchandise directly to kids himself. Except when he does, the kids don't have any money to pay for them since children don't have jobs or income.
  • Domestic Appliance Disaster: Darkwing's efforts to fix dinner, do the laundry, and talk to Launchpad all at once results in the laundry overflowing with bubbles and dinner catching fire. Worse, Darkwing is completely oblivious to it.
  • Funny Background Event: After the Not Now, Kiddo moment, Gosalyn pulls a fireman's hat and fire extinguisher out of nowhere and rushes off-screen while her dad finishes the call.
  • Good Parents: Acknowledged by the principal when she calls in Drake Mallard for a parent-teacher conference. On seeing how worried he is about Gosalyn's reckless school behavior, she gives him the best book she has on how to improve the household.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Drake Mallard tries to give up the Darkwing persona to entirely focus on Gosalyn. This ends up making Gosalyn miserable, and leads to Quackerjack kidnapping her and her friends.
  • Noodle Incident: Tank complains that Drake cut his "napalm" scene from the school play.
  • Not Now, Kiddo: Darkwing ignores Gosalyn's attempts to tell him that his attempts at multitasking are causing a mess.
    Gosalyn: Oh, dad...
Drake: Not now, honey, Daddy's talking on Mr. Phone!
    Gosalyn: But, dad...!
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Gosalyn, finally fed up with her dad's overbearing parenting style, decides to bail on the school play he's put together, along with Tank and Honker. Unfortunately, Quackerjack has found out about the school play too, and kidnaps them as they try to leave.
  • Take Care of the Kids: Inverted; Launchpad tells Darkwing that if something were to happen to him, he'd raise Gosalyn like she was his own daughter. Given that he follows this up by running into a telephone pole, Darkwing is not reassured.
  • 10-Minute Retirement: Drake Mallard manages for a few hours as trying to be a normal dad. The minute he sees Gosalyn in trouble, he snaps back without hesitation.
  • Worrying for the Wrong Reason: When she and Darkwing get trapped by one of Quackerjack's toys, Gosalyn expresses worry about their being "blown to bits". Darkwing corrects her that they'll be smothered before that happens.
