Recap / Darkwing Duck S 1 E 11 Easy Come Easy Grows

Go To

A crime wave sweeping the city causes Herb Muddlefoot to bury cash in his backyard for safekeeping. It sprouts a money tree, which is grabbed by Gosalyn and then by Darkwing.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Bail Equals Freedom: Launchpad suggests pooling his, Gosalyn's, and Honker's money for bail as a solution. Even this fails because they don't have enough, but Darkwing gets out anyway when a safe bursts through the wall.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: As a half-plant mutant, Bushroot freely eats compost without any trouble.
  • Bribing Your Way to Victory: Bushroot tries to pay Darkwing Duck to leave him alone with his stolen riches. Darkwing refuses the bribe, but he has to sharply scold Gosalyn when she starts snatching up the cash for herself.
  • Chekhov's Gag: Binkie singing her plants to sleep every night comes up briefly in the middle of the episode. Then Darkwing is able to use music to get Bushroot's plants relaxed enough for him and the others to escape. Honker comments that apparently his mom was right about plants liking music.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The Mr. Mulch fertilizer that Binkie mentions at the the beginning of the episode ends up playing a big role in the climax.
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: Darkwing and Launchpad cover Honker and Gosalyn's ears when Bushroot gets pulled through the shredder.
  • Evil Laugh: Darkwing does a Negaduck-style cackle when he sees the money tree.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: Bushroot and the two money trees working with him get mulched going through a shredder, although Bushroot survives thanks to his regenerative capabilities.
  • Grammar Nazi: Darkwing correct Herb's double negative.
Herb: Come on over, neighbors! You can't hardly miss."
    Darkwing: That's can hardly miss."
  • Grows on Trees: The plot is kicked off by a money tree sprouting in the Muddlefoot's garden. It transpires, however, that this is part of Bushroot's scheme - he created dollar bill-shaped seeds that sprout vines, allowing him to steal lots of money from across the city.
  • Literal Metaphor: A startled Bushroot responds to Darkwing telling him to "put 'em up!" by growing his arms until they reach the ceiling. They then proceed to flop to the floor like limp spaghetti.
Bushroot: See what you made me do?! I hate it when this happens! (starts shrinking his arms back into his body)
Darkwing: (grossed out) So do I, it's disgusting!
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When accused for counterfeiting Darkwing shows the policeman the money tree, but it has withered so Darkwing has no other choice but surrender himself peacefully.
  • Punny Title: The title is a pun on "easy come, easy go."
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: Upon realizing that Bushroot was responsible for the crime wave, Darkwing smacks himself over the head and asks "How stupid could I be?".
Gosalyn: (To Launchpad and Honker) Does he really want us to answer that?
Darkwing: (Flatly) Thank you for your support.
  • Skewed Priorities: Gosalyn starts griping about the situation after Darkwing is dragged off for counterfeiting. Launchpad thinks she means her dad being jailed, but she actually means they'll have to return everything bought with the money.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: All Herb was trying to do was hide his money in a hole in the backyard; if he hadn't, Darkwing might never have caught onto Bushroot's scheme.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: When confronting Bushroot in the greenhouse, Darkwing asks him why he needed such an elaborate scheme to steal money when he'd figured out how to grow it. Bushroot explains that his dollar bills are just leaves and thus obviously fakes, crumbling one up to show the difference.
