Recap / DC Super Hero Girls (2019) S2 E20 to 21 "#DCSuperHeroBoys"

Go To

While investigating a plague of strange graffiti across Metropolis, the DCSHG soon find themselves face-to-face with their Distaff Counterpart, the all-boy super hero The Invincibros! Much worse, though, is when the graffiti tags open a portal allowing three deadly Kryptonian villains to escape from the Phantom Zone!

Tropes:

  • Arrow Catch: Green Arrow fires dozen of arrows at Ursa and Non, but for the Kryptonians it's trivially easy to catch them all with their bare hands and break them.
  • Battle of the Sexes: Both teams compete to be the ones to save the day and get all the glory. Fortunately both of them realize they can't handle the threat on their own and join forces.
  • Bowdlerise: Suicide Slum becomes Sinister Slum.
  • Cerebus Syndrome: This begins a stretch of multi-part episodes with somewhat more serious storylines.
  • Clark Kenting: Subverted when Green Arrow takes off his domino mask to reveal his identity to Zee but it turns out she doesn't remember having met Oliver Queen before. Until he overacts in front of her.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
Batgirl: [gasp] Hal Jordan? The dumb jock?!
Hal: [charmer voice, complete with Bishie Sparkles] That's me.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He's been consistently portrayed as a buffoon, but Hal's the one who recognizes the need for the groups to join forces to save the day. He's the one who comes up with a ploy to get Steve Trevor away from the fight, allowing Wonder Woman to devise a battle plan so they can actually start getting the upper hand on the villains.
  • Crying Wolf: Zod demands Superman surrender himself, or the Phantom Zone villains will destroy the world. Kara begrudgingly calls him at the insistence of her teammates, but turns out she'd pranked him by saying General Zod was attacking before, so he hangs up on her.
  • Exact Words: When Zod demands the Heir to the House of El, Supergirl assumes he means her but it turns out he means Superman and doesn't remember Kara Zor-El.
  • Eye Twitch: Kara's eye starts twitching when Zod tells her that he never heard of her, and that he want Superman instead.
  • Fight Off the Kryptonite: Literal example: General Zod manages to power through the effects of a kryptonite nugget. Fortunately the heroes come up with another plan.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Supergirl is willing to surrender herself to save Metropolis while believing herself to be the one Zod meant by Heir to the House of El.
  • Kneel Before Zod: Zod's first line in the episode is to order people to kneel before him.
  • Lame Pun Reaction: Bumblebee's been working on her banter. A little.
Bumblebee: [pulls ahead of Hawkman] I'll bee seeing you, honey!
    Hawkman: [growls]
    Bumblebee: Aaaaah! Sorry! Sorry, sorry!
  • Mythology Gag: The Kryptonian bad guys are the ones from Superman II, outfits and all.
  • Noodle Incident: How the graffiti appeared and if someone on the outside did it for the villains, is left unexplained.
  • Punch Catch: When Zod has had enough of toying with Wonder Woman, he catches her fist and punches her back into the ground.
  • Spear Counterpart: Each member of the Invincibros plays counterpoint to one of the girls.
    • Naturally, Green Lantern Hal for Green Lantern Jessica
    • Green Arrow to Zee, both being dramatic personalities
    • The Flash to Batgirl, both being excitable personalities who are easily distracted
    • Aqualad to Bumblebee, both being ignored by the student body at large
    • Hawkman to Supergirl, both being The Big Guy
    • Steve might not be as strong as Wonder Woman, but he certainly is her weakness. They are also both the leaders of their respective teams.
  • This Looks Like a Job for Aquaman: Supergirl brings enough water for Aqualad to be able to defeat Zod.
  • The Unmasking: Played for laughs; the heroes' secret identities quickly fall apart around other heroes who go to the same school as them. The best is without a doubt Zatanna revealing Batgirl's identity to escape the awkwardness of not recognizing Green Arrow unmasked.
  • What Have We Ear?: Zatanna pulls the old quarter-behind-the-ear trick on Non. Except it's a piece of kryptonite.

General Zod

Zod powers through kryptonite radiation long enough to destroy the chunk Wonder Woman threw at him with his bare hands, then boasts to the heroes about it.
