Hal's ex-girlfriend Carol Ferris, better known as Star Sapphire, returns! Can Jessica defeat her without resorting to violence?

Tropes:

  • 2-D Space: Averted. During Jessica and Hal's sparring, they end up fighting above and upside down in relation to Kilowog.
  • Book Dumb: Carol mentions that she once tried to get Hal to read Pride and Prejudice, and he asked where the pictures were.
  • Cooldown Hug: Jessica eventually defeats Star Sapphire by pulling her into a hug and explaining to her that Hal doesn't love her.
  • Dumped via Text Message: How Hal broke up with Carol. He put a smiley face, but that didn't exactly help.
  • Embarrassing First Name: Jessica reveals that Hal's real name is actually "Harold."
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While Kilowog is hard on Jess during her training session, he's not wrong in saying that her pacifist methods won't work all the time and she'll have to physically fight sooner or later. Hal later agrees after the session, as well as when Star Sapphire became so powerful that Jess's methods won't work.
  • Glass Smack and Slide: As they are running away from Star Sapphire's blasts of energy, Jessica is protecting Hal Jordan from in a round bubble of force. But when she learns that Star Sapphire is mad because Hal broke up with her through text, Jessica stops suddenly and Hal runs into the force bubble, flattening his face and sliding down as if it was glass.
  • Mistaken for Romance: Star Sapphire assumes that Jessica is Hal's new girlfriend.
  • Psychosomatic Superpower Outage: Hal is so scared of Carol that his ring stops working when she shows up.
  • Pulling the Rug Out: While Jessica refuses to use her powers in violent ways, she is not above creating carpet under Kilowog and pulling this trick to beat him.
  • Rapid-Fire "No!": Jessica after Star Sapphire mistakes her for Hal's new girlfriend. Her reaction switches during it from amused explaining to hard denying.
  • Shout-Out: "What, behind the cheerleader?" "It is the cheerleader!" is a reference to Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
  • Skewed Priorities: Jessica is more angry that Hal broke up with Carol then the fact that Carol is trying to murder them.
  • Sudden Downer Ending: Played for Laughs — just when it seems like Jess managed to get through to Carol with her speech, it turns out that Carol's still determined to make Hal her boyfriend and learning to love herself just made her more powerful than ever before.
  • Take Off Your Clothes: While in the boys' locker room, Jessica unexpectedly tells Garth to take off his clothes, to his confusion. What she wants is to "borrow his style" to make Hal Jordan unattractive.
  • Violence is the Only Option: Discussed throughout the episode, as both Kilowog and Hal try (but ultimately fail) to convince Jessica to start using force against her opponents.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Jessica berates Hal after she finds out he broke up with Carol over text.
  • Worst. Whatever. Ever!: Star Sapphire describes Hal's break-up text as "Worst! TEXT!! EVER!!!"
