Chapter 9 — Sinister Revival

Izuku feels the guilt of the unintended aspect of his Quirk, even though neither Tsuyu nor her parents blame him for it, although their classmates' reaction does not help. His nightmares about everyone rejecting him are interrupted by Tae's spirit managing to talk to him through a dream to thank him for saving her soul and giving her a second chance to live, and telling Izuku that, if he's so afraid about Tsuyu's reaction, he should ask her himself. The next morning, Tsuyu is able to touch Izuku, proving that she has burned out the last vestiges of Izuku's Quirk, and makes it clear that she could not hate Izuku regardless of his fears.

At U.A., Nezu receives a call: the son of a friend of his has died. The circumstances are more than suspect, though: Masao (who was always happy and full of life, and was planning to become an idol under the alias "Lily") was supposedly found by his stepmother after committing suicide, but not only can a cursory check show that Masao was brutally attacked before his death, the stepmother is preventing an autopsy and pushing for the body's immediate incineration. Nezu requests Tsukauchi to bring Masao's body to U.A., and asks Izuku a favor: to return Masao to life. Although reluctant to do so, Izuku agrees on the condition that the police investigate Tae's murder, which the also present Detective Tsukauchi agrees with.

At the medical office, Izuku quickly moves, requesting clothes for Masao while he pulls some blood from himself into Masao's body. A few minutes pass, and when Tsukauchi is ready to give up, Masao wakes up again - and speaks. While Recovery Girl notes that Masao is still clinically dead, the child's scared comments clue Tsukauchi and Nezu into what happened to Masao: he was sold to a group of pedophiles who abused and killed him.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Abusive Parents: Ichigo is a horrible woman who deliberately sold Masao to a group of pedophiles knowing that they would end up killing him.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: Downplayed. Izuku notes that Masao could easily pass as a pretty pre-teen, and he actually cross-dressed as "Lily" with plans to become an idol.
  • Foreshadowing: Recovery Girl's reaction to Masao's revival not only reveals her Lack of Empathy, but foreshadows her mental issues.
    • The fact that Lily can talk even though she's a zombie foreshadows the reveal that Tae not only can also talk, but is faking she can't.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Nezu convinces Izuku to use his Quirk to revive Lily so they can find out who killed her.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Izuku wishes for some coffee to help him think of a way to escape the problems that he feels coming for him.
  • Lack of Empathy: While Izuku, Nezu and Tsukauchi are furious about what happened to Masao, Recovery Girl thinks about how she'll become famous as the doctor who conquered death. She later proposes to carry out Lily's autopsy even though the child is clearly in shock.
  • Nausea Fuel: Hearing what happened to Masao makes Izuku feel very queasy.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: After Kaminari suggests Izuku should have used his Quirk on Momo, he quickly takes a slap from her and a jack to the eye from Jiro.
  • Power Perversion Potential: Izuku is too nice to even consider doing it, but when his classmates learn of what has happened, Ashido and Mineta believe he would take advantage of his control of Tsuyu, while Kaminari says he should have tried to aim for Momo.
  • Restored My Faith in Humanity: Tae manages to tell Izuku through a dream that his actions did this for her.
  • Revealing Cover Up: Ichigo's insistence that Lily committed suicide and demand for the body's immediate incineration clue Nezu in that the woman is less than innocent in the matter.
  • Undead Child: Masao/Lily is a ten-year-old child who Izuku revives as a zombie so she can reveal what happened to her.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Masao/Lily was killed by a group of pedophiles.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Tae tells Izuku that he saved her and that he's much better than he thinks he is, while Nezu states that Izuku's belief that he's a monster is grossly inaccurate.
