Hotchner: Thomas Hardy wrote, "And yet to every bad there is a worse."
A cop who is undercover investigating a human trafficking ring runs into a trafficking victim who is the leader of the trafficking ring undercover. The cop's boss seeks help from the BAU when she doesn't hear from her for too long.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Berserk Button: Lucy doesn't react well when Renee calls her "sick".
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Lucy realises Rossi has seen through her Wounded Gazelle Gambit, she tries to pull a gun on him. Before she can pull the trigger, Morgan drops her.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Lucy pretends to be one of the abducted people, but she's actually the leader of the trafficking ring.
  • The Brute: Leon's a huge man and actually manages to curbstomp Morgan. He's subordinate to both Lucy and Max in the ring's hierarchy though.
  • The Bus Came Back: The final scene of the episode is Rossi meeting with JJ in his office, and she tells him that she's returning to the BAU.
  • The Dragon: Max heads the ring while Lucy pretends to be a victim, and is killed trying to ram the police with a car in order to facilitate her escape.
  • Emotionless Girl: When not acting, Lucy comes off as this.
  • Glass Cannon: Leon gives Morgan a vicious beating, but once he recovers, Morgan drops him in one punch.
  • Human Traffickers: The UnSubs run a human trafficking ring where they kidnap and sell people to be tortured and killed.
  • A Mother to Her Men: Andi joins the case to rescue one of her undercover agents. When the FBI and SWAT team arrive at the trafficking ring, Andi makes a beeline to Renee and checks to see if she’s alive.
  • Only in It for the Money: Lucy claims this to be her reasoning for running the trafficking ring, but it's pretty clear that she gets off on it.
  • Russian Roulette: Lucy plays this game with Renee, before the SWAT team arrives at the ring's hideout.
  • Tiny Tyrannical Girl: Lucy.
  • Wham Line: After Lucy is led to the ring's customers and men:
    Lucy: Welcome back, everyone.
    • For a heroic example, there's also JJ at the end of the episode:
  • The Worf Effect: Leon gets the better of Morgan for most of their fight, though Morgan still wins in the end.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Lucy attempts to pass herself off as one of the abducted people to Rossi. It doesn't work.

Rossi: "What it lies in our power to do, it lies in our power not to do." Aristotle.
