The Bureau visits the Jwaneng Diamond Mine in the city of Gaborone, Botswana, to look for clues regarding SOMBRA's interest in Lavinia De Brills's diamonds. There, Chief Ripley orders Carmen and the player to investigate the mine where Lavinia's family extracts most of their diamonds, only to find the body of journalist Jude Connelly impaled on a giant drill bit.

Tropes:

  • The Alibi: Jonah gets a solid one regarding his status as The Mole, since you find a file issued by the traitor detailing every last thing the Bureau has done since they were in Europe, which Jonah shouldn't be able to know since he joined at the end of the Sahara.
  • I Am Not My Father: When Michelle suggests Marina could be The Mole due to she being the daughter of a known SOMBRA agent, Marina flies off the handle and refuses to be compared to her.
  • Asshole Victim: The victim was an Immoral Journalist who took advantage of a child worker so he could infiltrate a mine to smuggle diamonds, then attempted to murder his partner Olivier when he took a photo of Jude stealing one of the diamonds.
  • Berserk Button: For Marina, being compared to her mother is a huge no-no, which gets demonstrated when Michelle suggests she could be The Mole because of her.
  • The Big Race: The reason why Lily is in Botswana is because she's competing a road rally across Africa and the country has one of the pit stops. Later, you discover this race might actually be a front for SOMBRA to smuggle diamonds, since they pretended to be an anonymous sponsor and asked Lily to transport a briefcase that contained a huge diamond to the finish line.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: One of the killer's traits is that they eat fried caterpillar, something that Angela seems to like too and Carmen finds disgusting.
Angela: The larvae of the emperor moth, Gonimbrasia belina, are full of protein and are a well-loved snack in this part of Africa. With a little peanut butter sauce, they're delicious!
  • Call-Back: Lily Karam reappears, this time as a suspect.
  • Continuity Nod: Michelle mentions how Marina's mom was arrested for being a SOMBRA agent.
  • Fanboy: Olivier Feraud, a field photographer visiting the mines, is a huge one of Carmen, showing excitement the first time he meets her and congratulating her for that Pulitzer Prize.
  • Friends with Benefits: Lily and the victim had this kind of relationship, though she cut it off after he became an obsessive Stalker with a Crush towards her.
  • He Knows Too Much: Subverted. Throughout the case, Carmen theorizes that Jude discovered something about SOMBRA smuggling diamonds and therefore was silenced by them, but the murderer's motive ends up being totally unrelated to the organization.
  • Immoral Journalist: The victim took advantage of Goodwill, a 12-year-old boy working on a diamond mine, by pretending to care for him so he could infiltrate said mine and steal diamonds, and tried to kill his partner when he found out and tried to report him.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: The victim was killed by being impaled on a moving drill bit, which according to Angela liquefied his internal organs.
  • Intrepid Reporter: Carmen tells you how Jude often took risk all for the sake of getting a good story, and theorizes that he stumbled onto SOMBRA and therefore was killed for it.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: At the end of the case, it seems like Frida is getting scot-free of her crimes as a diamond smuggler, but Carmen and the player intercept her when she tries to escape with a bag full of gold ingots.
  • Killing in Self-Defense: Olivier killed Jude when he tried to murder him first after Olivier took a photo of Jude smuggling a diamond. For this reason, Judge Adaku gives him a 15-year sentence but with chance of parole in 5.
  • Mysterious Backer: Lily explains that the reason why she tried to take a briefcase with a diamond was because an anonymous sponsor for The Big Race asked her to, which helps Chief Ripley and Carmen deduce that said sponsor is none other than SOMBRA using the race to smuggle diamonds.
  • Outlaw Town: A lair full of smugglers serves as a crime scene.
  • Protest by Obstruction: Goodwill Ngele tries to protest child labor on the diamond mines by hanging himself over the Victoria Falls, disrupting public security and forcing you to rescue him.
  • The Rival: Carmen claims Jude was this for her, as they always tried to upstage each other by getting better stories than the other.
  • Shout-Out:
  • That Came Out Wrong: Carmen accidentally makes fun of the victim's death after you solve his murder.
Carmen: Even when Jude wasn't the ethical journalist I thought he was... He didn't deserve to end his life as a Bloody Mary...
    Sorry, that was inappropriate...
  • Troubled Child: Goodwill is willing to put his life in danger by hanging himself from a massive waterfall to protest child labor and exploitation, showing how much it has affected him.
  • Unwitting Pawn: SOMBRA is using the rally racers across Africa to smuggle diamonds for the organization without the racers knowing about it, pretending to be anonymous sponsors and asking them to deliver briefcases with diamonds to the finish line.
  • Venturous Smuggler: Frida Cruz, one of your suspects, is a notorious diamond smuggler that is even labeled as the Smuggler Queen among everyone. However, she's forced to retire after she find out about SOMBRA, since they're far more powerful than her and she doesn't want to get in trouble with them.
