Fight!

The Bureau reaches Bangkok, Thailand, to follow the lead provided by a video found in the previous case, which depicted a member of SOMBRA encouraging the surviving children to advance to "The Next Level". But first, Ingrid asks Jack and the player to solve the murder of Thai boxing champion Thanid Tongproh, who was found strangled on the ring, since the local authorities have requested the Bureau's help.

Tropes:

  • Amazing Technicolor Population: Professor Marshall Metcalf has blue skin as a result of the many experiments he likes to run on himself. Later, Lars also turns blue when he tests one of Metcal's experiments on himself too, though Metcalf gives him the antidote.
  • The Boxing Episode: The case is centered around a boxing champion being murdered and how his profession was connected with the crime.
  • Broken Pedestal: Jack has one in behalf of the entire country after you discover some bad things about your victim.
Jack: I hate to speak ill of the dead, <Player's Name>, but Thanid Tongproh isn't turning out to be the national hero everyone would have you believe!
  • I Can't Hear You: Prof. Metcalf becomes temporary deaf during your second interrogation with him as a result of another of his experiments.
  • Career-Ending Injury: Baxter secretly had one of his arms broken, which assured he would lose against Thanid and gave him a solid motive to kill him.
  • The Casanova: According to his wife and coach, Thanid preferred to drink and sleep around than train.
  • Connected All Along: After appearing to be just another regular victim with no connection to the main plot, you discover during the Additional Investigation that Thanid was one of the SOMBRA orphans that got brainwashed and trained by them.
  • Continuity Nod: Jonah recalls how he and Marina had drinks together back in Bhutan.
  • Domestic Abuse: Maniwan, the victim's wife, tells you how violent he was outside of the ring, to the point he knocked out one of her teeth when he hit her. Unfortunately, she couldn't tell anyone about it due to him being famous.
  • Foreshadowing: While talking to Baxter, Jack asks him what's with his yellow eyes, which he claims are just contact lenses. Come Case 33, and you learn that there's another reason for that.
  • Gibberish of Love: Jonah tells you how he gets tongue-tied every time he tries to speak with Marina, much to his embarrassment.
  • How Dare You Die on Me!: Baxter, Thanid's rival, berates him for dying when they were supposed to fight for the championship.
Baxter: Urgh, that's typical Thanid! I knew he was too scared to fight me, so now he just goes and dies on me!
Jack: Umm... yeah, I'm not sure that was part of his plan.
  • Implied Death Threat: Among Thanid's belongings, you find a message from Obaasan telling him that this fight was his last chance to prove he was worthy, otherwise he already knows "what happens to those who become weak and are no longer of use to them."
  • In-Series Nickname: Baxter is nicknamed "The Viper."
  • Killer Outfit: The victim was killed by being strangled with his own headband.
  • Mysterious Backer: This case introduces X, a Mysterious Stranger informing Elliot from the shadows about things related to SOMBRA such as Thanid's connections with them. At the end of the case, they request the Bureau go to Singapore and talk with Michelle Zuria, a woman with more information.
  • Mysterious Past: Thanid's wife tells you how he never spoke about his past apart from the fact that he was an orphan. Later, you learn this is because he was part of SOMBRA's recruiting program.
  • One-Letter Name: The Mysterious Stranger you learn about in this case is only named "X".
  • Open Secret: While Ingrid asks Jack and the player to keep Thanid's death a secret, soon everyone in Thailand gets to know about it due to a news report.
  • Professor Guinea Pig: Prof. Metcalf.
Marshall: Oh yes, that. I forget that can be off-putting for people. I have a tendency to run experiments on myself. Sometimes there are unexpected... side-effects!
  • Retired Badass: Orlando Weathers used to be a boxing champion before retiring a becoming a coach.
  • Romantic Wingman: In the Additional Investigation, you help Jonah invite Marina to a date.
  • Ship Tease: A big one between Jonah and Marina, with the former making it clear that he has feelings for her while she accepts his invitation to a date.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Baxter Fraser resembles Little Mac.
    • In the Ringside scene, there is a Superman action figure, without the "S" emblem.
  • Side Bet: Chon Sansurin is a bookmaker for boxing tournaments who claimed Thanid was his cash cow. Didn't stop him from murdering Thanid over a dispute though.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: The fact that Ingrid requests for the investigation of a famous boxing champion to be entirely secret instantly backfires on her face when, soon enough, everyone in Thailand knows about it due to how quickly news spread.
Jack: Well, it's kind of hard to solve a murder without talking to the suspects about it!
  • Technicolor Eyes: Baxter's eyes are yellow, though he lets you know they are contact lenses since he's called "The Viper" and it fits his image.
  • Test Subject for Hire: Prof. Metcalf tried to get Thanid to test some of his strenght-enhancing drugs, which he refused to do. Due to this, Metcalf instead decided to test them on other fighters, which Thanid considered unfair and unethical.
  • That Came Out Wrong: Chon gives one when you explain how Thanid is dead.
Chon: I was going to make a killing... oh, sorry, poor choice of words!
  • Throwing the Fight: Chon had offered Thanid half of the winnings if he lost the match against Baxter, since Thanid was the most likely to win so bets were on his favor. However, Thanid double-crossed Chon and refused to lose after Chon had already made bets with members of the mafia, so he had to kill him.
  • Verbal Tic: Chon likes to speak with gambling, betting, and chances metaphors. He also tends to say "krup" (a Thai word used at the end of sentences to make them sound more polite) a lot.
Chon: Me, killing a champion Thai boxer? The odds of me being able to overpower a trained fighter are... a million to one!
  • We Interrupt This Program: In Chapter 2, a news report appears on TV informing the country that Thanid has been murdered, angering Ingrid due to it not being a secret anymore.
