In Tokyo, Japan, Jack and the player are tasked with visiting an arcade where Ronin Ozawa, a supposed SOMBRA agent, was last seen along with a group of children, hoping to get some answers from the man himself. Before they can obtain them, though, they find the body of yakuza leader Yuto Watanabe inside of the establishment, shot in the head and with a katana sticking out of his stomach.

Tropes:

  • 1000 Origami Cranes: The killer stuffed an origami inside of the victim's pocket with the message "This is #1000. Now you are dead.", leading to Angela tell you about the legend.
Jack: A thousand origami cranes?! I guess that means the killer can hold a grudge...
  • Anime Hair: Suzuki Sakura.
  • Asshole Victim: Considering all the horrible things Yuto did as the leader of a yakuza group, including murdering his own nephew, sexually harassing Sakura, and making an alliance with SOMBRA to turn children into murderers, it's really hard to feel sorry for his demise.
  • Badass Teacher: Emily, an English teacher, recovered from a gunshot wound then spent a handful of years tracking down the man who gunned down her and her fiancé before killing him.
  • Bathroom Break-Out: Sanjay escaped from the Bureau's headquarters by jumping out of the bathroom's window.
  • Better to Die than Be Killed: The victim attempted to do this by committing Seppuku while being shot, but Emily was faster with her gun.
Emily: He tried to commit seppuku, but there was no way I was letting him do it! He needed to die by MY hands!
  • Big "WHAT?!": Jack in the following exchange:
Carmen: Hey, Archer. Aren't you supposed to be watching Sanjay?
Jack: Yeah, Carmen... why do you ask?
    Carmen: Because he's gone!
    Jack: What?!
  • Boom, Headshot!: How the victim was killed.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Judging by how Yuto didn't recognize Emily while she was teaching him English, it's clear that the memories of him shooting up her wedding were just another regular day for him.
  • Call-Back: Ronin Ozawa, Sanjay Korrapati, and Tsukada Chieko reappear as suspects.
  • Child Soldiers: What SOMBRA is apparently making of the recruited children, as they made a deal with the yakuza to train them with firearms.
  • Cliffhanger: The case ends with the Bureau rushing to Kyushu Island to look for Sanjay and the rest of the missing children, who are being sent there for "the next phase" of their training.
  • Cool Big Sis: Chieko is willing to take a gun in a country where gun laws are very strict and visit a yakuza-controlled arcade just so she can search for her brother on her own. Later, she also becomes a pseudo-replacement for Sanjay, helping him in whatever he might need and even giving him a cellphone so they can stay in touch.
  • Crusading Widow: After having her fiancé killed by Yuto's men right during her wedding, Emily decided to track down the yakuza leader and kill him with her fiancés own gun and pure dedication.
  • Dirty Old Man: Sakura tells you how Yuto constantly harassed her whenever she visited the arcade and even tried to Date Rape her.
  • Dominatrix: While not outright stated, Sakura tells you how Yuto forced her go to a party "in a dark place and with people in leather clothing", with Jack's reaction implying this is what she meant.
  • Evil Uncle: Yuto killed his own nephew Shiro after he left the yakuza group.
  • Fingore: Sanjay shows you how he sliced off his own finger to demonstrate to the yakuza that he wasn't weak.
  • Flat "What": Jack when Dupont gives you another of his long cultural explanations.
Dupont: Did you know that Japanese is an agglutinative, mora-timed language with a pure vowel system and a lexically significant pitch-accent?
    Jack: Uhm... what?
  • Gratuitous Japanese: Surprisingly, it isn't the suspects who say it, but you teammates whenever they provide you with analyses.
    Lars: Saikin dou, <Player's Name>!
Jack: Sake-do to you too, bro!
Lars: I didn't say sake, dude! I said saikin dou, it's "What's up?" in Japanese!
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Ronin claims to be this, as according to him he's just a honorable yakuza who just happened to get involved with SOMBRA after Yuto, the yakuza leader, made a deal with them. Of course, Jack finds nothing honorable about being involved with a criminal group training children with weapons.
  • Resignations Not Accepted: Shiro decided to leave his uncle's yakuza group and start a new life with Emily. Yuto's response? Gun down the wedding and kill everyone, including Shiro.
  • Secret Room: You find one hidden inside of the Video Arcade, which is the victim had his yakuza office.
  • Seppuku: How Yuto attempted to commit suicide. It didn't work.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Emily Wallace resembles Beatrix Kiddo, and her backstory and motivations for killing Yuto are almost the same as hers.
    • Sanjay's uniform features Pac-Man.
    • In the Game Center scene, there is a smiling mushroom, pixel art of a Space Invader, a stuffed monkey resembling Diddy Kong, some "Ctiri" machines, trading cards resembling Yu-Gi-Oh! and a "BBR" game.
    • In the Arcade Machines scene, there is the same "BBR" game, as well as the phrase "1UP", pixel art of a Space Invader and a drawing of a fox resembling Tails.
    • In the Tokyo Street scene, there is an ad reading "Just do it".
    • In the Sidewalk scene, there is a moon stick.
  • Slipping a Mickey: Sakura tells you how Yuto attempted to drug her drink during the party he forced her to go.
  • Take Up My Sword: After recovering from her wedding's attack, Emily took her late fiancés gun and used it to avenge him by killing Yuto with it.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Carmen and Jack show shades of this when they enter into conflict due to Sanjay escaping from custody under Jack's watch, clashing with Carmen's maternal instincts.
Elliot: Hey, guys. I could hear you arguing all the way down the hall... it's a miracle <Player's Name> continues to work with you two!
  • Troubled Teen:
    • Sanjay drank a whole bottle of sake by himself, sliced off his finger, and even was in contact with a yakuza group just for the sake of not appearing weak, then escaped from the Bureau's headquarters after being put into custody for his troubles.
    • There's also Chieko, who decided to brandish a gun in an attempt to look for her brother then helped Sanjay escape from Bureau custody, claiming that she needed to protect him from you.
  • Video Arcade: Where the victim was killed.
  • Villain Team-Up: Ronin confirms that Yuto and his yakuza group made a business deal with SOMBRA involving training children for "the next phase", pretty much confirming that Ronin, while not a direct member of SOMBRA, is still aligned with them in some way.
  • Vlog Series: Sakura has one, and thanks to one of her videos you get to see Ronin giving a gun to Sanjay "for his own protection."
  • Whole-Plot Reference: Emily's backstory and motivations for killing Yuto are just a watered-down and compacted version of Kill Bill: an English-speaking woman is attacked by a group of criminals in the middle of her wedding, her fiancé (who tried to left the criminal group) is killed and she's left in a hospital until she recovers, then goes to Japan and kills the leader of said criminal group while wearing yellow.
  • Widowed at the Wedding: Emily's fiancé was killed by his own uncle during her own wedding, leaving her on a quest for revenge once she recovered from her injuries.
  • I Will Find You: Chieko is still going with her quest for finding her brother Hiroshi, even infiltrating a yakuza group as she discovered children recruited by SOMBRA were being sent there.
  • Yakuza: The victim was the leader of the Watanabe-gumi yakuza group, and Ronin is revealed to be part of them too.
  • Young Gun:
    • Elliot finds a photo of Chieko brandishing a gun just outside of the victim's headquarters, where she explains to you she's using it for protection while looking for her brother.
    • In one of Sakura's video vlogs, you see Ronin giving Sanjay a gun "to protect himself" after encouraging him to be strong and make people pay if they mistreat him.
    • In a more humorous example, June finds a grenade during a visit to Jonah's lab, leading to him freaking out and begging her to not throw it.
