Carmen: We need to recap, <Player's Name>. We've got a dead satellite engineer on our hands, and a secret SOMBRA factory hidden under Mount Khan.

The Bureau arrives to Mount Khan, Mongolia, to look for SOMBRA's secret facility where they are building a satellite that will allow them hijack all of Earth's devices. There, Carmen and the player stumble onto the body of COSMORUS satellite engineer Andrei Beloglazov, partially sliced in a half with a saber.

Tropes:

  • Always Someone Better: Anya has started to see the player as this, accusing them of upstaging her back in Moscow and making her look bad, which is why she decided to come to Mongolia alone: so she could redeem herself by stopping SOMBRA.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption:
Lars: The blood on it was your victim's. But I was intrigued by the mask itself, so I called-
Dupont: We meet again, mes chers amis!
  • Better with Non-Human Company: Yelena tells you she prefers being among the Mongolian horses since they don't care or judge about how she's a failed cosmonaut.
  • Call-Back: Anya Ivanova, Asal Hawaa, and Yelena Tereshkova reappear as suspects.
  • City Mouse: Asal calls Jack a city boy after he apparently failed to distinguish between a horse and a yak.
  • Cliffhanger: The case ends with the Bureau rushing to a compromised COSMORUS launch site in Kazakhstan, since SOMBRA is planning to launch their satellite from there in no time.
  • Continuity Nod: Carmen recalls how bad Angela's photo skills were when you find a blurry picture of the victim.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: As a punishment for failing her mission back in Moscow, the MGB has sent Anya to the Mongolian countryside to check on horses and yaks. Later Subverted, though, as it's revealed she was actually sent to spy on the victim... then it gets Double Subverted when Anya confesses she's on an unofficial mission so she can thwart SOMBRA by herself.
  • Cool Mask: The killer used a traditional Mongolian mask while killing the victim, and Lars later puts it on to scare off Carmen.
  • Double Agent: The victim was a satellite engineer from COSMORUS who was also working alongside SOMBRA.
  • Easily Forgiven: Jack has already forgiven Asal about killing someone and hiding it from him, as they're seen together mounting a yak.
Carmen: Honestly, is there anything that boy won't forgive?
  • Elaborate Underground Base: SOMBRA has a massive underground factory just below Mount Khan where they're working on their satellite, which is acceded through the head of one of the mount's statues.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Somewhat. The victim was partially sliced in a half from shoulder to hip, but those halves remained connected until you found the body.
  • Hidden in Plain Sight: The entrance to SOMBRA's factory is through the head of a statue in Mount Khan.
  • Horse of a Different Color: You encounter Jack and Asal riding a yak during this case.
  • Improvised Weapon: The killer murdered the victim with a saber taken off a statue.
  • "Knock Knock" Joke: Carmen tries to defy this by refusing to participate in Lars' knock knock joke, but fails when he decides to play both parts anyway.
  • Love Hurts: Batbayar was in love with Andrei, who in return only treated him like a momentarily romance as he had planned to leave Mongolia as soon as he was done with the satellite.
  • Metaphorically True: When Carmen questions Asal about why she didn't reveal anything about knowing where SOMBRA's factory was, she says she didn't lie, but was just economical with the truth.
  • Mexican Standoff: A brief one happens between Anya, Asal, and Carmen during an argument about who should be leading the investigation.
  • Never Hurt an Innocent: Tsetseg's only rule as a hitwoman is not hurting children, women, or horses.
  • One Last Job: Tsetseg was planning on retiring after killing Andrei and becoming a horse breeder for her family's stables. Unfortunately for her, she ended up getting caught.
  • Only One Name: Both Batbayar and Tsetseg have only one name. Justified, as Dupont explains how Mongolians have traditionally been identified by their first name alone.
  • Professional Killer: Tsetseg, the killer, is a hitwoman who was ordered to assassinate the victim to "tie up loose ends."
  • Running Gag: Angela makes another Matryoshka doll, this time of Marina.
  • Saying Too Much: Tsetseg does this when she reveals she killed Andrei to tie up loose ends for SOMBRA, confirming that the satellite has been completed.
Carmen: If they considered him a loose end, his job must have been complete. Does that mean the satellite has been finished?!
Tsetseg: I... I didn't mean to let that slip! Gosh darn it! I'll say no more!
  • Shoot the Builder: SOMBRA ordered the hit on Andrei after he finished working on the satellite, since they considered him to be a loose end.
  • Shout-Out: The case's title is like a reference to Brokeback Mountain.
  • You're Just Jealous: When Carmen criticizes Anya for not witnessing the victim's murder despite being in charge of spying on him, she accuses you of just being jealous about not having an agent like her in the Bureau.
