Jones: I've always wanted to go sailing the seas, you know, with the wind in my hair and perhaps a mermaid or two along the way...

During a yacht party hosted by mayoral candidate Martha Price, the body (minus the legs) of heir Andrew Ashworth is fished out of the water.

Tropes:

  • Alliterative Name: Andrew and Archibald Ashworth.
  • An Arm and a Leg: The boat rotors that killed Andrew completely cut off his legs.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Jones remarked that the victim still looks "dashingly handsome" even after being cut in half.
  • Casual Kink: Andrew and Isabella were in a BDSM relationship, which she loved due to her desires about being dominated. However, she grew tired of him after Andrew started trying to control her outside of their sex life, so she killed Andrew by luring him to the ocean then slashing his legs off with the turbines of the yacht.
  • Call-Back: Jezabela reappears to give you some information about the case, since she owns the club the victim often visited.
  • Continuity Nod: Martha mentions the events of the previous case, thinking that the red campaign is trying to divert the bad rep towards her with another murder.
  • Cool Old Guy: Despite being a little eccentric and disliking his grandchildren, Archibald Ashworth is pretty cool and friendly as long as you don't harm his bees.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: Patricia claims she wasn't actually stalking Andrew, but rather followed him around for a little while to get a hang of his day-to-day life.
  • Dysfunctional Family: The Ashworths seem to be this, with Archibald not caring about his grandson Andrew's death due to considering him an Spoiled Brat who thought he was entitled to his money, much like his other grandchildren.
  • Eccentric Millionaire: Archibald, who strongly dislikes human interaction (especially with his family) and prefers to hang around bees. Even Jones calls him "the old loony."
  • Fishing for Sole: Jones discovers the victim this way.
  • Ironic Name: Isabella Fairchild, she seems to be a sweet but fragile young lady but it's found out she's the one who killed Andrew in a rather brutal fashion.
  • Jack the Ripoff: Subverted. At first it appears that the killer copied Patricia's book to commit the murder, since both victims were named almost the same and they died in similar circumstances. However, Andrew's cause of death ends up being totally unrelated to her book.
  • Lampshade Hanging: After you find a locked device, Jones says that the residents of Maple Heights are as careless with their belongings as people are in the other districts.
  • Last-Second Word Swap: After you're needed to speak with Jezabela again.
Jones: Good thing I still have Jezabela's numb... Uh, I mean, you know, we can find her number by looking at the files from that old case, haha!
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Jones and you encounter a book called "Troubled Waters", and Jones tells you it could be the name of your investigation.
  • Malicious Slander: Martha thinks the murder happened because the Johnson family trying to smear her political campaign, though this is later proven to be false.
  • Mistaken for Murderer: Jones himself believes he's the one who killed Andrew after fishing his body out of the ocean, though Nathan quickly disproves it.
  • Rudely Hanging Up: Jones suddenly hangs up on Jezabela before she has the chance to ask when he will be visiting her club again.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Martha Price resembles Hillary Clinton, as well as being the candidate for the "Blue Party".
    • Patricia P. Harris resembles Jessica Fletcher.
    • In the Sun Deck scene there is artwork of a mermaid resembling Ariel, "Poseidon" carved into the floor, and an iPad
    • In the Terrace scene, there is another artwork resembling Ariel.
  • Spoiled Brat: Both Martha and Archibald thought this about Andrew, seeing him as a Manchild who didn't deserve his money or being part of the family.
  • Stunned Silence: The following exchange:
Patricia: Jezabela? Now, when you told me about her dungeon, I knew I had to meet her! Now I've started writing a new novel, exploring the particular link between passion, murder and S&M.
    Jones: I... Alright.
  • Sue Donym: Patricia P. Harris wrote a novel with Andrew Ashworth as the protagonist, only that his last name was changed to Sootworth instead.
  • Too Much Information: While Isabella is recalling the murder, this happens:
Isabella: I knew he'd never stop, so I agreed to meet with him again. We stopped by his Grandfather's house to steal some mead. Andrew loved to lick it off m-
Jones: I think we're getting the picture, thank you!
  • Who Writes This Crap?!: Jones' reaction after he sees Andrew's description in Patricia's book.
Jones: Yep, that sounds like our victim alright. Who wrote this book?!
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Isabella, the killer, pretends to faint after she sees Andrew's body.
