Kelsey is tagged and becomes it, causing most of the Creek's residents to run from her, but she can't bring herself to pass the same fate on to anyone else.
Tropes:
- Don't Be a Hero:Kelsey: Don't be a hero. That's what I'm doing!
- Endless Game: Tag is normally an open-ended game which lasts until everyone feels like stopping. In the Creek, the game just doesn't end, and whoever's it will be avoided indefinitely (or at least as long as they're still in the Creek). The same game has been going on for years, maybe decades, with no clear origin.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Kelsey decides to end the game of tag by exiling herself from the Creek, reasoning that she's already used to being alone. Craig begs her not to leave... and hugs her, which makes him it. After she tries to get him to tag her back, Craig convinces her to Take a Third Option.
- Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Craig has a vision of kids in the Creek's past inventing tag, then sees the ghosts of the same people when the game finally ends. No one else sees them, and there's no evidence it's an accurate history, so it could easily just be his imagination.
- Negate Your Own Sacrifice: Instead of letting himself or Kelsey be exiled, Craig tags his brother Bernard—who doesn't care, because he hates the Creek, and had to be tricked into coming there at all.
