Lilly and the team reinvestigate the case of Laurie Dunne, a college freshman who in 2004, died of suffocation due to a fraternity house fire. As the case progresses, they soon discover that Laurie was a victim of fat-shaming, compounded with prior evidence presented by her father that suggests her death was no accident.
Tropes:
- Bittersweet Ending: Joseph Avery and Manny are both arrested, with Shirley even taking a humiliating picture of the latter during his Perp Walk, and it's implied that Avery's career and the fraternity will not recover from this scandal. Also, Dirk finally told Laurie's father what happened that night. However, Laurie is still dead and Deidre is still arrested for causing the fire, and she's clearly been traumatized by everything that happened to her during that night and the knowledge she is partially responsible for Laurie's death.
- Corrupt Politician: Councilman Joseph Avery has a history of sexually harassing women, often at his former fraternity house. He sexually assaulted Deidre.
- Daddy's Girl: Laurie was very close to her father to the point that when she realized she was going to die, she made Dirk promise that he would take care of her dad after she's gone so that he isn't left alone.
- Disproportionate Retribution: After being fat-shamed and force-fed booze for the sick amusement of the frat brothers, Laurie retaliates by taking pictures for evidence to use against them later. Manny "punishes" her by planning to rape her, then locking her inside a burning house to die.
- Fiendish Fraternity: The fraternity Gammo Rho is shown holding "pig parties" — i.e. inviting plus-sized female students over to be relentlessly tormented and forced into humiliating rituals and games, often sexually assaulting them (with Joseph Avery being a particular culprit). When Laurie attempts to retaliate by photographing the horrors, Fratbro Manny locks her in a room after the frat house is set on fire. Manny shows no remorse and still refers to her as a "pig".
- Hate Sink: Manny Jones, the fraternity president. He humiliated plus-sized girls in front of his frat brothers for his and their amusement by luring them to a "pig party" and crowning the fattest, then gets mad at her for retaliating. Even after the "winner" dies, it does not discourage him from talking trash about her weight. Worst of all, he’s partly responsible for her death as he locked her in a room while the house was aflame and threw away the key.
- Laser-Guided Karma: In the past, Manny got his kicks by taking shaming pictures of women he deemed "fat". Later, those same girls got to take shaming pictures with their phones of him being arrested and walked to a police car. Even better, one of them is holding her phone in manner that looks like she's Flipping the Bird at him.
- Last Request: When Dirk could not get Laurie out of the locked room of the burning house, she pleaded with him to look after her widowed father when she was gone. He tearfully promised.
- Never My Fault: Manny gets mad at Laurie when she takes incriminating photos and sends them to her laptop so she can use them against the fraternity, and acts like it was completely unprovoked, like he didn’t invite her and her friends to a pig party to fat-shame and humiliate them, then force-fed her booze to do her in.
- Speak Ill of the Dead: Just because Laurie’s dead, it won’t stop Manny from fat-shaming her.
- Too Dumb to Live: Laurie got out of the pig party with her life. Instead of leaving and calling the authorities then, she decides to follow Dirk back to the party to confront him, and that's when Manny decides to take revenge upon her for taking photos of the party. Not helping was that Laurie called for the other victimized girls to burn down the frat house, and Deidre took upon herself to light it on fire, while Laurie was still inside.
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom:
- Laurie and Deidre were initially not invited to the "pig party", but accidentally bumped into Dirk at the cafeteria. Dirk then invited them to the party on Manny's suggestion, not knowing about his plans.
- Joseph Avery fat-shamed and sexually assaulted the girls once too many, causing one of them, Deidre, to throw a match to the fraternity house in retaliation. The victim of this case died of suffocation due to inhaling smoke generated from the resulting house fire.
- Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Laurie, Deidre and the plus-sized girls endured a Humiliation Conga at the frat house. Deidre took it a step too far and accidentally killed Laurie by setting the frat house on fire.
