Recap / Code Lyoko S 4 E 26

Go To

Odd’s parents come by for a visit. The youth grouses about his family to his friends (who are stunned at how nice, in fact, Odd’s parents are), preferring to be in conflict with them like every other “normal” teenager. Meanwhile, Xana attacks, using mobile phone to make their owners particularly aggressive, thus fulfilling Odd’s wish: his parents, victims of the possessed phones, are now looking to kill their son…

This episode contains examples of:

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: When Yumi and Ulrich are shot out of the sky by a Manta, Ulrich is able to dig his saber into the side of a rock face to suspend their fall.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Initially, Odd complains that he never fights with his parents at all and he wishes they would get angry with him at least once. He changes his tune once XANA possesses his parents and they try to kill him, even declaring that he will never complain about his parents not getting angry ever again.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: XANA possesses Odd's parents and some of the students and faculty, but unlike most Xanfied humans, they don't display any superpowers and retain their normal personalities and speech patterns, aside from wanting to kill Odd and Sissi.
  • Breather Episode: As the last episode before the four-part finale, it carries shades of this. The domestic conflict is nowhere near as dramatic as previous times, the stakes are lower than the previous three episodes, and even XANA's attack is notably Lighter and Softer compared to previous ones. As a further sign, XANA!William is absent from Lyoko, one of the few episodes where he does not appear despite having a perfect opportunity to do so in this one.
  • Brief Accent Imitation: When a half-naked Ulrich is locked out of his room by Odd, Jeremie imitates Jim's voice, yelling at Ulrich, though Ulrich mistakes it for an imitation of Principal Delmas.
  • Brick Joke: Sissi remarks that Odd always makes fun of her in his short films. After the time reversion, it's revealed Odd is actually showing her waking up from sleep as a metaphor for transforming from a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly.
  • Contagious A.I.: XANA possesses an entire mob of people at Kadic, using their cell phones to spread his influence. Sissi is the only person besides the Lyoko Warriors to not be possessed, as her cell phone was broken. In contrast to the last time he possessed a crowd of people however, the possessed individuals become crazed and insane, and Jérémie's warnings imply that this is not a standard Demonic Possession due to the cell phone medium.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Cutting the Knot: Attempted by Sissi: When she and Odd are on the roof of the school's science building, about to be pushed off by the Xanafied mob, Odd asks for a sandwich for his last request, which the mob agrees to. Sissi then asks for a parachute, which is quickly shot down.
  • Death by Irony: Yumi is hit by a Krabe and Jeremie admonishes her for losing most of her life points. She tells him she'll try to avoid being hit again and is devirutalized immediately after by a Kankrelat's laser. Upon returning to Earth, she angrily comments "What an idiot I am!" as she's furious with herself.
  • Description Cut:
    • When all the Lyoko Warriors except Odd make it to the factory, Jeremie tracks down Odd's location using his cell phone, noting that Odd is surrounded by the Xanafied mob in the cafeteria and is in big danger. Meanwhile, Odd is shown happily eating meatballs in the cafeteria, even commenting that it could use extra gravy.
    • Ulrich struggles to ride the Overboard for the first time, and asks Aelita how Odd can do it; she responds that he isn't afraid of falling. Cut to Odd on the roof of the science building with his Xanafied parents pushing him to the edge, with him even proclaiming "I'm afraid!" to boot.
  • Food as Bribe: As Ulrich is stuck out in the hallway in a mere towel after leaving the showers, Jeremie and the girls ask why he's stuck outside. He reveals how Odd is locked in their room and won't open it. Jeremie immediately tells Odd that if he doesn't open the door, he won't get his portion of meatballs during lunch. Ulrich dismisses his effort, saying it won't work. Cue Odd opening the door and Jeremie commenting "Never fails!"
  • Good Parents: Odd feels dismayed when his parents are visiting because unlike most teens, he doesn't fight with them at all; they're completely supportive of him and his hobbies. Naturally, the others sarcastically talk about how hard Odd has it. Ulrich, of course, immediately says he'll happily switch with him any time.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When XANA triggers the cell phones of everybody in the auditorium, Jim chastises the audience for keeping their phones on as Odd's short film is about to be screened, before answering his own cell phone when it rings and asking the caller if it's his mother.
  • Mood Whiplash: Odd asking for a last request, to which the Xanafied mob treats with some seriousness.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: At the beginning of the episode, the normally energetic and extroverted Odd is locked up in his room, which turns out to be his anxiety and frustration with his visiting parents.
  • Saved by the Platform Below: Aelita creates a small platform with her Creativity to break Ulrich and Yumi's fall.
  • Winged Humanoid: Aelita makes a lot of use of her wings in this Episode.
