English Episode Title: Betting on Odd — French Episode Title: Vendredi 13
Odd buys a lottery ticket and wins!....but so did everyone else. Jérémie and the gang suspect its a XANA plot, and later find out that his true goal was to destroy the Skid.
This episode contains examples of:
- 13 Is Unlucky: The episode is called "Friday the 13th" in French, it's the 13th episode of the series, and it's set on Friday the 13th In-Universe. The episode also deals with Odds' supposed unluckiness with dating Samantha and piloting the Skid.
- Bait-and-Switch: XANA's plan is initially to just make all the lottery tickets with Odd's number the winner, and use that as a distraction to infect the Skid so they can't get to the Cortex.
- Call-Back: The episode shares it's lottery themes with Season 2's The Chips Are Down, though asides from lottery winning being a plotpoint, it has no other relevance in the story. It also shares it's themes with Season 4's Hard Luck too.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: Aelita once again towards Laura. The others have caught onto this behavior, as Aelita suggesting Laura's help makes them all turn their head in shock, as they're aware of how much she dislikes Laura.
- Continuity Nod:
- Yumi answering William about what she'd do with the money is the exact thing her parents did in The Chips Are Down when Ulrich gave their parents a winning ticket; give it all to charity. Meanwhile Ulrich claims he doesn't play, while looking very angry doing so (likely in reference to the episode).
- Enemy Mine: Aelita's grudge against Laura is justified, given previous episodes' events, but she seems to completely ok, if reluctant, to ask for Laura's help with the super computer if someone is in trouble on Lyoko.
- Exact Words: Aelita tells Odd to press the white button....despite there being lots of white buttons. She clarifies immediately, and means the sixth to her right.
- Never Win the Lottery: Odd is ecstatic at winning the lottery... except lots of other people did too.
- Something about a Rose: Odd buys 1000 roses for Samantha after "winning" the lottery. She appreciates the gestures, and kisses him ont eh cheek for it, but he is some serious debt.
- Superstition Episode: Odd is superstitious to a fault, and seemingly wins at the lottery, and buys 1000 roses for Samantha. Odd also thinks that he's cursed because every time he tries getting with Samantha, it always goes wrong.
- Techno Babble: Odd, though he later shows surprising competency at piloting the Skid once told how the systems work.
- Tempting Fate: Odd uses every superstition in the book in the hopes to win the lottery. His insurance is a horse shoe, for example.
- The Unreveal: The Skid is in such bad shape that Laura is tasked to be virtualised to help fix the issue. However, with the advisement of Aelita, Odd fixes the Skid before this happens, and she doesn't get to go to Lyoko (Aelita grabs Jérémie's arm to stop him), much to her annoyance. Though this does mean she now has true Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory now.
