Recap / Close Enough S 01 Ep 05 Skate Dad

Go To

Josh tries to bond with Candice by teaching her how to skate, only to get upstaged by The Goosh, a professional skater at the skate shop.

Tropes:

  • Disability Immunity: The metal plate in Josh's taint ends up saving him and his family by protecting him from further injury during the race down Baxter Street.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Emily gets that Josh wants Candice to learn to skate, but misses the point that he wants to be the one to teach her. When Josh is incapacitated, she hires the Goosh to teach her in his place, which only inflames Josh's jealousy.
  • Epic Fail: Josh's first skate lesson with Candice quickly goes wrong when his first attempt at a pretty basic trick sees him land crotch-first on his board.
  • Freudian Excuse: Josh's father never took any interest in his skating hobby; he just waited outside the shop, honking his car horn and impatiently pointing at his watch. This fuels his desire to be a different kind of dad to Candice. Hearing about this, The Goosh admits that his relationship with his own father was much the same, and that he took up skating to reject him.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Josh gets extremely jealous when The Goosh gives Candice skate lessons in his absence.
  • Groin Attack: Josh injures himself this way while attempting a skateboard trick; it's so bad that the doctors have to put a metal plate on his taint.
  • Incredibly Lame Fun:
    • The toy unboxing videos Candice watches on her phone. The presenter is more interested in the packaging than the toys themselves. Notably, Candice has the exact same toy in the video sitting right next to her, still in its box, but prefers to watch the video with a dead-eyed stare.
    • In turn, Candice is unimpressed by the toys Josh played with in the 80's - or terrifed, in the case of his Teddy Ruxpin which catches fire when he turns it on.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Josh inadvertantly copies his father's "impatient watch-pointing" getsure. Although the context is very different, realizing that he's doing it nonetheless spurs Josh to calm down and explain his feelings to The Goosh.
  • Nice Guy: The Goosh doesn't take any of Josh's bitterness personally, and backs off willingly once Josh calms down and explains himself properly.
  • Shout-Out: Josh's Dream Sequence is taken directly from The Big Lebowski, down to the soundtrack.
  • Subliminal Seduction: A demonic voice plays when Candice chooses her Satanic-themed skateboard; it's actually a message to buy Regular Show DVDs.
