Recap / Clarksons Farm S 3 E 8 Calculating

Go To

Harvest time arrives and is tenser than ever, as Jeremy and Kaleb find out how profitable both Jeremy's new projects and Kaleb's arable farming have been this year.
— Synopsis
A montage of the unpredictable weather at the farm is shown off to start off the episode. Clarkson and Kaleb are driving down the farm in the Range Rover while discussing about the weather conditions over the past year, with the Diddly Squat Family hoping for an "old-fashioned autumn" so that they could maximize their profits; this, unfortunately for the gang, did not happen, with all the crops being too wet to harvest despite repeated moisture tests from Kaleb, Clarkson, Charlie and Simon.

Andy would later meet Clarkson, projecting his worries about how well his wheat was growing, stating he might have put too little nitrogen fertilizer, with Clarkson and Charlie discussing the matter at some length. Thankfully for the Family, weather conditions started to improve and the barley was just right to harvest. With Charlie having gone to the US during the harvest season, Kaleb is essentially left fully in charge of the farm; he summons Clarkson to his "office" and calls a meeting with him to get him up to speed on risk assessment and mitigation.

Following the meeting, Kaleb met up with Simon to harvest oats in the field where Kaleb had originally planted rapeseed; Clarkson would soon show up at the field to render his assistance, much to Kaleb's exasperation. Kaleb requests Clarkson to hook up a half-full trailer, which he does so with difficulty, leading to Simon's impatience; with Kaleb's intervention they manage to get the trailer hooked up, with Simon snickering in the background. With Kaleb asking Clarkson to test the hydraulics, Clarkson accidentally dumps a load of oats on the the ground and nearly dumps more; exiting the tractor, Kaleb chastises Clarkson for his actions and the complexity of his tractor.

Luckily for Clarkson, his godson just so happened to be at the farm for "work experience"; he and Kaleb help with scooping up all the spilled oats. With Simon ready to unload another bunch of oats from his combine harvester, Clarkson readies into position; he initially catches the oats but as he drives along but is positioned slightly wrongly, leading to the oats to spill out of the trailer, much to Kaleb's exasperation. As a last resort, Simon dumps his loads into Clarkson's trailer while he is stationary to prevent any spillage, with Clarkson's only saving grace being that Kaleb was not around to witness this. Despite the numerous hiccups, Clarkson, Kaleb and Simon complete the harvest of both oat fields, with all oats in the shed.

Annoyingly for Clarkson, Kaleb and Andy, there is a projection for rain that day, with all weather apps giving virtually the same forecast. Kaleb makes a decision as farm manager, deciding to finish one wheat field and finish Andy's field by the end of the day. Andy had been worrying that due to his method of applying his fertilizer the yield for that field would be paltry; his prediction would turn out to be correct, with an unsatisfactory yield produced from "a third" of the field. Working through the night, Clarkson, Simon and Kaleb manage to harvest Andy's wheat just in time before the rain came; the next day, the wheat and beans produced from the yield would move to be milled.

With that out of the way, Clarkson, Kaleb and the others turn their attention to the rapeseed. With Clarkson ranting about the advice he and Charlie gave Kaleb regarding planting the rapeseed and him refusing to heed it, Clarkson and Kaleb perform a moisture test on one of the remaining rapeseed fields; the rapeseed returns with a result of 12%, being too wet to harvest, with Kaleb suggesting they return a few hours later to perform another test. A second test is performed some hours later, with the rapeseed still being too wet to harvest; Kaleb suggests that the rapeseed be harvested regardless and him paying for a drying charge for the rapeseed as opposed to him waiting for it to fully dry around the time the wheat is also ready for harvest and tells Clarkson to make a decision. Unable to make a decision, Kaleb makes the decision for him and calls Simon to harvest the rapeseed.

With Simon and Kaleb harvesting the field, Clarkson leaves to check on his mushrooms; Kaleb soon discovers from Simon that the rapeseed he had planted was only good to fill a quarter of the combine harvester, much to his exasperation. Clarkson rejoins Kaleb and Simon when they were on the second and final field of rapeseed, when Kaleb breaks the bad news to Clarkson; he checks the trailer to see the yield, appalled at the amount. An extremely demoralized and dejected Kaleb then explains to Clarkson why his field of rapeseed had ultimately failed, largely due to the unpredictable weather conditions; to cheer him up Clarkson offers him a beer and they share an embrace.

With a pause in harvesting following the completion of the rapeseed fields, Clarkson heads off to London to see his new granddaughter while Kaleb is left on the farm to check on the pigs, now in labor. Kaleb checks on Unit, now in labor, and tends to her needs as she grunts and lies flat on the grass. The next day, numerous piglets are born; so many piglets were born in fact that Kaleb calls Dilwyn to help separate some of the smaller piglets from other mothers and assign them to a new mother to increase their chances of survival. Clarkson and Lisa arrive soon after to greet the newborn piglets. After tabulation, Clumsy, Unit, Swiz and the other sow gave birth to 53 piglets in total and Clarkson's ring contraption was working as expected to reduce piglet deaths.

With the pig births sorted, Clarkson, Kaleb and Simon begin harvesting the barley; it is here where Charlie's fears about the barley materialize again, with Kaleb noticing random patches of green in the barley they had harvested, which ideally would not have been there, meaning that the erratic weather would have likely ruined the barley. Following this, the wheat and durum wheat are also harvested, with the durum wheat harvested by "assistant combine driver" Gerald, with Kaleb assisting him. All harvesting was completed a few days later; around the same time, Charlie returns from his vacation and drives to the farm in his new Audi A7. Soon after, he and Kaleb discuss about the crop situation and collect samples to ascertain the quality of his crops.

While Kaleb and Charlie collect samples, Clarkson and Lisa pull together his last bits of revenue from his "farming the unfarmed" project and head to the mustard plant fields, where he discovered that Lisa used one of the mustard plant fields to plant potatoes for her second attempt at making potato chips. Clarkson and Lisa then calculate the profits they would be getting from the potatoes before Clarkson set off with his trailer to harvest the mustard plants. As Clarkson attempts to get into the mustard field, he knocks down a fence post; with Kaleb's assistance he manages to get into the field by lifting his trailer. Clarkson would soon realize that getting farming machinery into places not normally farmed by farmers would be a lot harder than he initially thought, with Kaleb and Simon having to take a circuitous route around the farm just to get into these fields, in addition to having to knock down a fence post.

With the mustard plants harvested, Clarkson eagerly awaits his yield, only for there to be barely any. Realizing his paltry yield, Clarkson immediately takes to the farm's kitchen to prepare mustard with whatever little mustard plants he had harvested. Gloating about his new mustard seed cracker, Clarkson its use but forgets to open the lid for the machine, leading to seeds spilling all over the counter; with the seeds now cracked, Clarkson gets about to producing the mustard and makes 36 jars to put up for sale in the shop at £6 a jar.

The next day, Clarkson and Charlie discuss the results from the various tests conducted on the crops; the wheat turns out to be unusable for making pasta while the barley is considered unsuitable for malting and production of beer, with Clarkson and Charlie having no choice but to use the wheat and barley as feed. With all the dreary news, Clarkson decides to take Lisa for a drive, taking them to the farm of Tim and Katy Coles; there, they see Pepper feeding on the grass outside the farm, as well as her calf Tabatha ("Tabby" for short). They then talk to Tim, who state that Maestro, the bull the farm rented from Tim and Katy back in Season 2, was the one who impregnated Pepper about a month after getting her back.

A week passes. By now, all the results for the harvest were in, which meant that the contest would come to a close; through his "farming the unfarmed" project, Clarkson made a profit of £27,614. Charlie would soon after arrive with Kaleb's results for his cropping; after totaling up his crop costs, Kaleb makes a profit of £44,987, allowing him to win the competition handily and giving the farm a combined profit of £72,601.

Kaleb suggests going to the pub to celebrate, with Charlie quickly shooting down that idea as all profits from the current cycle would have to be used to purchase seed, fertilizer and other implements for next year's cycle, with the farm having already started planting for next year's cycle. Clarkson later airs his grievances about farming, admitting it was difficult to have to give up their earnings to Charlie to buy seed and fertilizer for the next year. Clarkson equates this to the family doing a lot "for nothing at all", with a montage of events playing of past happenings at the farm over the year to Where Do The Children Play by Cat Stevens; despite the tumultuous year, the Diddly Squat Family gather for the customary yearly picnic, next to Clarkson's incomplete dam.

As they eat, Clarkson and the others reminisce about past events and thoughts, while also reminiscing about the good times throughout the year, with Clarkson becoming a grandfather, Kaleb becoming a father for the second time and Gerald's cancer going into remission. The Diddly Squat Family share what they are thankful for throughout the year, with the episode, and the season, ending on a toast.
