Recap / Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina 4 E 05 Deus Ex Machina

Go To

Sabrina encounters a surprise at school — and faces a pivotal decision. Theo explores the perks and pitfalls of Robin's time in the mortal world.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Brought Down to Normal:
    • It's revealed that Robin is slowly losing his fae nature, so Theo — pressured by one of Robin's hobgoblin friends — breaks up with him and tells him to join the other hobgoblins in the Otherworld.
    • After Lilith kills her son, Lucifer strips her of her demonic and witch powers, and curses her with Age Without Youth.
  • Easy Road to Hell: Sabrina Morningstar complains about people ending in hell for trivial reasons like eating shellfishes or wearing polyester.
  • Fusion Dance: Sabrina Spellman and Sabrina Morningstar decide to fuse together to prevent the mortal world, Hell, and Heaven from merging together. They decide to go through with the merger, but Ambrose stops the ritual at the last second.
  • Laugh Track: The parallel universe that Sabrina Morningstar is sent to is a sitcom-like world resplendent with bad puns punctuated by laugh tracks.
  • Light Is Not Good: Metatron maintains that in order to avert the destruction of the cosmos, either one of the two Sabrinas must die or they must merge together. When Ambrose stops the merger, Metatron tries to kill them and is killed by Satan.
  • Offing the Offspring: Lilith kills and cooks her son as revenge for Satan having killed her lover.
  • Pre-Climax Climax: Faced with the prospect of being erased when she merges with Sabrina Morningstar, Sabrina Spellman has sex with Nick.
  • Remake Cameo: In the alternate universe Sabrina Morningstar is sent to, the Spellmans' house looks the same as in her home universe, but Zelda and Hilda are played by Beth Broderick and Caroline Rhea, their actresses from the Sabrina the Teenage Witch sitcom.
  • Sequel Episode: The final scene, after Sabrina Spellman goes to the other universe, sets the tone for the episode after the following, as Sabrina is welcomed by two strange women (played by Caroline Rhea and Beth Broderick in their Remake Cameo) claiming to be her aunts. Said episode is the continuation of this.
  • Time Crash: Hell starts merging with Earth. Metatron explains that — as Ambrose feared — having two Sabrinas is causing the mortal world, Hell, and Heaven to destructively merge with each other. It's revealed that the next eldritch terror is responsible, having created two duplicate cosmoses.
  • Trapped in Another World: In the end, Sabrina Morningstar is sent to a parallel universe to stop the Time Crash from occurring.
  • When Dimensions Collide: The Cosmic, another Eldritch Terror, appears. Due to there being two Sabrinas - Spellman and Morningstar - in the same universe, there are two universes colliding, and this causes major havok in theirs, not to mention one or both Sabrinas may die and one or both universes might get destroyed. In the end, this is (temporarily) solved by Sabrina Morningstar going to a sitcom universe using her magic mirror.
