Recap / Chaotic S1 E01 Welcome to Chaotic: Part 1

Go To

“Welcome to Chaotic (part one)” is the first episode of a two-part premiere for the first season of Chaotic.

Tom Majors is a teenage boy who likes to play an online card-game called “Chaotic”. One day, he receives a message in the game that contains only a mysterious code. His best friend, Kazz Kalinkas tells him that the code is a password to Chaotic, as in the real world of Chaotic and Tom can now go there with this password. But of course, Tom doesn't believe this. After all, Chaotic is just a video game. It's not real, right?

After Kaz continues to insist, Tom finally gives in and uses the password, which causes part of his consciousness to be transported to the parallel world of Chaotic. He barely has time to adjust to all this before he has to go to his first real match in Chaotic, where you don't merely use the cards of the game, but transform into the creatures in these cards and engage in combat with other players. Unfortunately, Tom isn't quite prepared for all of this and his performance in his first match is less than spectacular. Can he turn the tables and still score the win? Or is he going to face a humiliating defeat?

The episode Welcome to Chaotic(part one) provides examples of:

  • …And That Little Girl Was Me: The episode begins during a battle between Maxxor and Takinom with the former running away from the latter. We then hear Tom narrate how Maxxor is one of the Overworld's fiercest warriors and usually wouldn't be running away from Takinom, before revealing that the reason he's behaving like this is because Maxxor is actually Tom in Maxxor's body!
  • Cassandra Truth: When Kaz realizes that the code that Tom received is an invite to Chaotic, he's ecstatic that his friend can go to Chaotic and experience the world of Perim like him. Unfortunately, Tom isn't inclined to believe that his video game is a real world and that he can now teleport there, assuming his friend is either lying, or crazy.
  • Chase Fight: Tom's first Chaotic battle consists mainly of him running away from his opponent.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends in one of these, with Maxxor/Tom falling down from, fittingly enough, a cliff.
  • Deadpan Snarker: The robot who welcomes Tom to Chaotic is this. He makes sure to express his annoyance about how all new players have the same reaction the first time they arrive in Chaotic before properly welcoming him. He also isn't too happy about their reaction to seeing a talking robot for the first time.
  • Description Cut: After slipping on ice and falling face first on the snow, Tom comments on how embarrassing that was and expresses relief that no one saw that. Cut to a large gathering of players watching and laughing at his predicament on a large monitor.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Peyton can be seen in the background, first walking around and later laughing as Tom makes a fool of himself during his match. He's properly introduced in episode 3.
  • Early Installment Character-Design Difference: Maxxor's character design is bit different from what it would be later on in season one.
  • Embarrassing Pyjamas: Downplayed. We do see one girl laughing at Tom's pajamas as soon as he arrives at Chaotic, but Tom himself is more concerned with the fact that he just got teleported to an unknown location and with the talking robot floating right into his face.
  • Foreshadowing: We briefly see Klay standing next to two other players talking about how there's a bunch of newbies arriving that day, and how fun that always is. Cue to Tom running around screaming and Klay watching him with a glint in his eyes. It shouldn't come off as a surprise when he turns out to be a major antagonist.
  • How We Got Here: The episode begins in the middle of Tom's first match in the battledrome, before flashing back to early that day when he received his invitation code. We are then shown his arrival in Chaotic and finally reach back to his match where the episode started.
  • Hurricane of Puns: Tom and Sam Shady trade a few during their first confrontation in the match.
Sam!Takinom, as he launches fireballs at Tom: I'm just getting warmed up! You want the full Chaotic experience right?
Tom!Maxxor: Well uhh, things are getting a little too hot. So no thanks. (Looks around at the frozen landscape) I'll like to keep things cool.
Sam!Takinom: This is really cool. Torrent of flames!
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: A non alcoholic example. As he watches Tom's embarrassing himself during his first match, Kaz asks a robot for a double chocolate milkshake.
  • Meaningful Name: Tom's first opponent is a guy with the screen name of “Sam Shady”, who tried to trick Tom into revealing his strategies and playstyle to get an easy win out of a newbie.
  • Mr. Exposition: Kaz plays this role during this episode. As he already has been in Chaotic for some time, he explains how it works to Tom and by extension, the audience.
  • Pajama-Clad Hero: Tom was wearing his pajamas when he first used his chaotic code, leading to him spending his first time in Perim wearing these.
  • Slippy-Slidey Ice World: Glacier Plain, the location of Tom's first Chaotic battle is this.
  • Three-Point Landing: While running from Sam, Tom managed to pull off one of these.
