Recap / Castlevania 2017 S 3 E 1 Bless Your Dead Little Hearts

Go To

It has been a month since the defeat of the vampire lord Dracula. His son, Adrian "Alucard" Tepes, now resides in the castle from which Dracula tried to wage his war against humanity, living in self-imposed exile. While life is quiet and peaceful for him, the solitude proves to be a tad wearing on his mental well-being: he made crude dolls of his old companions, Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades, to keep him company, though even he has to admit that his sanity is being taxed...

Trevor and Sypha, meanwhile, have spent the time since defeating Dracula travelling through the countryside, slaying night creatures to protect innocents and earn themselves a tidy profit. Their journey has led them to the small village of Lindenfeld. They are welcomed by the town's leader, known simply as the Judge; and another traveler, an eccentric man who calls himself the Count of Saint-Germain. Not everyone here is so welcoming, however, as Trevor and Sypha find themselves under suspicion from the monks of the local priory.

Elsewhere, Carmilla, a former member of Dracula's war council, marches back to the castle keep of her vampiric "sisters". She is greeted by two of her most trusted allies, Striga and Lenore. While her scheme to usurp Dracula's castle didn't quite go to plan, she has a new plot to secure dominion. Instrumental to this new plan is Hector, a human and one of Dracula's Forgemasters whom she coaxed into helping her during her original coup. Hector is bruised, beaten, and in no position to resist as Carmilla orders him imprisoned. Inside the castle, Carmilla meets with the fourth member of the sisterhood, Morana, who welcomes Carmilla home, and the four reaffirm their camaraderie.

Tropes

  • Avenging the Villain: What Prior Sala intends to do if he finds the ones that killed Dracula.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": Sypha pretending to be helpless in order to give the monsters attacking them a false sense of security. Lampshaded by Trevor.
  • Better than Sex: The free beer he gets after arriving in Lindenfeld is better than sex, according to Trevor. Sypha indignantly freezes it in response.
  • Companion Cube: Alucard made two dolls modeled after Trevor and Sypha, and has conversations with them to pass time.
  • Finagle's Law: It took Carmilla a month to get back home since, as she put it, everything that could go wrong, did. Among other things, she and her army lost their horses almost immediately, forcing them to continue on foot, and they suffered attacks from both humans and monsters alike.
Carmilla: There isn't anyone from here to Braila that I don't want to fucking murder.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: Alucard realizes his new solitary lifestyle is driving him nuts, and it’s only been a month since Trevor and Sypha left. He thinks...?
  • Hospitality for Heroes: Trevor notices a beer stand after selling the werewolf's teeth. He asks for a tankard in advance, saying he'll have the coin shortly, but the seller tells him he can have the first one free for killing it.
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: Carmilla only refers to Hector as “it”.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Sypha calls Trevor out for selling the teeth of the monster they brought with them to Lindhelm, but has to admit Trevor is right that they need the money for food and shelter.
  • Mood Whiplash: The opening is a long, somber scene of Alucard catching and preparing his dinner set to a lone piano. As he finally sits down at the dinner table to eat he looks to the empty chairs...and strikes up a conversation with crude puppets of Trevor and Sypha sitting on a nearby shelf:
"Trevor": I think I hate everything and everybody, so I'm going to get drunk on beer that's been brewed in an old sheep carcass, and then I'm going to stick my tiny penis in a dead dog I found in a ditch to make hate-babies or something because I am actually more stupid than mud.
"Sypha": You are a horrible, terrible person, and many other words for horrible and terrible, because I know all the words, because I am smarter than everybody, and one day I will go back to live with my flea-bitten family in a cart, which makes me better than everyone, and you will all die in a fire. A big one
  • Mugging the Monster: With the twist that it is four actual monsters that make this mistake; they attack Trevor and Sypha, believing them to be defenseless travelers, and find out the hard way these are experienced monster slayers who were baiting them (albeit badly).
  • Mythology Gag: The Noodle Incident with the pirate of the roads seems to be a reference to Grant Danasty, the pirate companion of Trevor Belmont from Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse who was Adapted Out from this Netflix adaptation due to being out of place in a landlocked Wallachia.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: The werewolf initially had the upper-hand on Trevor, then Trevor got serious and laid into it with a series of throat-punches and kicks to the leg that eventually snapped it. With the werewolf on its knees, Trevor breaks its neck so hard that it tore the monster's throat.
  • No Delays for the Wicked: Averted; Carmilla suffered multiple setbacks on her journey home, hence why it took her a month to get there.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, Trevor and Sypha ran into a man riding a sailboat on wheels, who called himself "the pirate of the roads". St. Germain also makes a comment about "the idiot who put wheels on his boat", so they clearly aren't the only ones who've run into him.
  • Oh, Crap!: Trevor and Sypha have a mild one when they learn the town they want to spend the night is home to a cult worshipping Dracula, whose leader has vowed to avenge the vampire. They decide to keep their last names and the fact that they were the ones who killed Dracula a secret for now.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Trevor and Sypha are now a couple, even having a conversation about their sex life.
  • Shameful Strip: Hector is thrown in the dungeons of Carmilla's castle, completely naked.
  • Title Drop: Carmilla tells her group "Bless your dead little hearts!" after being given a goblet of virgin blood.
