Recap / Castlevania 2017 S 2 E 8 End Times

Go To

The trio look over the battle damaged remains of the castle, noting that the device that moved it was melted by Sypha's spell. Wanting to give his new friend some purpose in life (?), Trevor bequeaths him the Belmont Hold, telling him to watch over the incredible store of knowledge in both it and the castle. Trevor and Sypha set off once more, planning to reconnect with the Speakers before heading off on their next adventure together. However, as they ride into the sunset, Alucard wanders the now empty castle and remembers his childhood, finally letting himself cry in his old bedroom.

Meanwhile, Hector informs Carmilla that the sun's down, allowing her to emerge from the house they were hiding in. After chatting a bit, Carmilla has her remaining soldiers forcefully attach a collar and chain to him; she needs a new army, and her new "pet" forgemaster has just the skills for it. She and her bodyguards march a weeping Hector through the streets and to the roads as the terrified townsfolk bar their windows.

Meanwhile, Isaac retains a bit more freedom. After being harassed at an oasis by some bandits, who decide to enslave (or eat) him, he promptly butchers them. Deciding he might as well have an army, he revives them as monsters before setting off in search of new recruits.

Tropes

  • Aesop Amnesia: Hector learned two episodes ago that Carmilla's friendliness was just a front and she was only manipulating him to get what she wants. He forgets this and is relaxed and open with her up until she captures him.
  • Asshole Victim: The bandits who Isaac viciously kills and turns into monsters lose any sympathy seeing how they threaten to kill, sell, or eat him with absolutely no provocation.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Trevor and Sypha are off to have more adventures and the villains are foiled for now, but Carmilla and Isaac both plan on filling the void left by Dracula, and Alucard is left broken from the death of his parents.
  • Book Ends: The season began with Trevor and Sypha waving off the Speakers before going to meet Alucard (who's brooding over the prospect of having to kill his father) in the remains of a house that was destroyed in a big fight scene. It ends with them setting off to meet the Speakers again, leaving behind Alucard in a home which was just destroyed by the big fight scene (as he weeps over having had to kill his father).
  • Dénouement Episode: The climax was in "For Love", and Dracula is already dead by now, but plotlines related to Isaac and Carmilla were not finished, and the heroes have a Now What? moment as their quest has come to the end.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Hector finally snaps at Carmilla when she reveals she plans to enslave him and build an army. Unfortunately, it's too late for any good to come from it.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Trevor leaving Alucard the Belmont hold was well-intentioned but he doesn't consider how Alucard might feel alone in his broken home with nothing but memories of his family. Alucard breaks down right after his companions leave.
  • I Am a Humanitarian: The bandit leader suggests that they might eat Isaac. After Isaac promptly kills them all, he's seen chomping on some meat...thankfully, it came from one of the Bandits' horses (if nothing else, he has other plans for their remains...).
  • "It" Is Dehumanizing: The bandit leaders never refer to Isaac as a person but as an it. Isaac references this trope.
  • Made a Slave:
    • Hector becomes Carmilla's slave, after she locks him in chains and beats him into submission.
    • The bandits threaten to do this to Isaac (or possibly eat him). He responds by killing them, bringing them back as minions and more or less doing exactly what their leader threatened to do to him.
  • Mugging the Monster: The bandit leader who threatens Isaac finds himself maimed, killed, brought back as a horrible monster and dragged behind Isaac's horse (while his former subordinates are allowed to share one) as a slave, exactly as he threatened to do to him.
  • Ship Tease: Sypha and Trevor get a lot in this episode, between Sypha wanting to bring him with her, Trevor acknowledging her as his first friend in years, the two snuggling while watching the sun set and their light-hearted jabs as they ride off together.
  • So What Do We Do Now?: All three of the heroes face this
    • Alucard was planning on either sleeping or dying after defeating his father. Trevor gives him the Belmont hold in order to give him a purpose protecting both the vampires' and humanities' collected knowledge.
    • Trevor assumes that Sypha was going to rejoin the Speakers but instead she mentions how she gained an appreciation of adventure and hunting and doesn't want to return to her people's passive pacifistic ways
    • Sypha also encourages Trevor to resume monster hunting rather than what is implied to be his plan of resuming being a wandering drunkard.
  • Stepford Smiler: Alucard does hint at some of his turmoil to Sypha and Trevor but mostly hides his grief. He only breaks down after they've left.
  • What You Are in the Dark: With his mission fulfilled and Trevor and Sypha having left, Alucard sits in his father's chair, sobs to himself, now alone with what is left of his dead family.
