Recap / Carl S 4 E 8 The New Girl

Go To

A new girl, Emily Brandneu, joins Toad Town High, and she attracts the attention of both Boo and Dry Bones, who both compete with each other to see who will she end up choosing as her boyfriend.

Tropes

  • Abusive Parents: Talia hid Parents Evening from her parents out of fear that they would critcize every little thing she does at school. When they find out about this they start ranting about their daughter quite harshly, with her father even subtly stating that she will end up as a hooker because of Chad.
  • Accidental Misnaming: Boo calls Emily Julie on their art class.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: During art class, the names of the artists that the students have to do research on are written on the whiteboard, with these being Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Leonardo da Vinci and Tekashi69, most commonly knwon as 6ix9ine.
  • Brutal Honesty: Emily is quick to make comments about the people she has talked to when they are not looking, both mocking Talia and Carl's hairstyles and calling Grace a weirdo.
  • Call-Back:
    • This episode explains why Talia's parents were absent from "Parents Evening": Talia didn't tell them about the event.
    • The events of "Carl's House Party" and "The Truth Comes Out" are brought up by Talia, as those are Dry Bones cheating on her with Kylie and Talia finding out about it respectively.
    • Grace mentions that Carl liked her for almost a whole year and didn't say anything. Carl retorts by saying that he saved her from Gooper, with Grace mentioning how she kicked him in the balls. All of this references both seasons 1 and 2 of Carl as a whole and "The School Dance" duology
    • Talia mentions to Emily the time that she and her friends went on a trip on Dry Bones' father's motorhome.
  • Comic-Book Time: Talia mentions it's been two years since she and Dry Bones broke up. None of them have aged a single day since then.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Exaggerated. If Janet and Ronald had been better parents towards Talia by not pestering her and acted so demanding all throughout of her life (or Carl's entirety so far), she wouldn't have had to hide things from them, yelled at them and make her become the way she is today.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Talia yells at her parents that the reason why she didn't tell them about Parents Evening is because no matter what she does, they pester her and demand more beyond her possibilities. After she runs off, her parents are shocked that she has had the audacity to yell at them.
  • Dude Magnet: Emily is this to Dry Bones and Boo (and Gooper too given that he tried to force her to hook up with him). All of this is unintentional given that Emily has no interest in men whastoever.
  • Either/Or Title: According to the description of the video on YouTube, this episode's alternative title is "War of the Simps".
  • Food Slap: Talia quits her job by throwing a tray with milkshakes at Dedede's face and storming off Goomburger.
  • Graceful Loser: Boo takes quite well being rejected by Emily, unlike Dry Bones. In fact, he seems a lot happier once he learns that she is a lesbian.
  • Hates Their Parent: Talia outright tells her friends that she considers her parents to be "dumbasses" and that she hates them.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While Talia's parents are far from stellar and are the source of many of her problems, they aren't wrong when they say that Chad is having a negative influence on Talia.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Emily tells Boo and Dry Bones that she won't date either of them because she's a lesbian, although she does also tell Dry Bones that she wouldn't date him even if she were straight because he's not her type.
  • Incredibly Obvious Tail: As per request of Boo, Carl and Grace follow Emily around and wait for the perfect opportunity to talk to her. At one point, Grace and Carl hid behind a bush and Emily could see the top of Grace's head poking out of it.
  • I Was Beaten by a Girl: Gooper is easily overpowered by Emily when he tries to force himself onto her.
  • Love Triangle:
    • Most of the episode consists of Boo and Dry Bones fighting to see which one of them ends up with Emily. In the end, Emily chooses neither of them because she is not attracted to men.
    • A teen soap opera that Grace watches with Carl (read. Grace watches it, Carl sleeps through it) seemingly involves one of this as well.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: Oscar and Janie find Khloe Kardashian opening a car door to be very interesting.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • How come Roxanne's drinks ended up in Talia's schoolbag?
    • Why did someone stuff a Goomburger bag down a toilet?
  • No-Sell: Emily is completely unfazed by Gooper's attempts of forcing himself onto her. When he tries to hook up with her by force, she easily overpowers him.
  • Retcon: Boo was said to have died of illness as a result of his parents not being able to pay the electricity bill all the way in Season 1. In this episode however, Boo states that he was hit by an oil truck instead.
  • Shout-Out: Emily mentions to Carl and Grace that Boo turns red and covers his eyes whenever she looks in his direction. This is the pattern of the Boo enemies in the Super Mario Bros. games.
  • Sore Loser: After being rejected by Emily, Dry Bones gets angry at her, caliming that she wasted his time, calls her a Gold Digger and goes away.
  • Sorry, I'm Gay: Emily chooses neither Dry Bones or Boo to be her boyfriend, revealing that she is a lesbian and thus not interested in men.
  • Straight Gay: Emily is a lesbian, but she only reveals this at the end of the episode.
  • Take This Job and Shove It: Talia quits her job at Goomburger after Dedede berates her for not cleaning up the toilets even though she had been busy with other clients at the time, and because he was going to force her to work on her day-off. Talia throws a tray with milkshakes at Dedede's face and storms off the restaurant. This is only Talia's Rage Breaking Point, as it's not the first time Dedede has mistreated Talia.
Talia: "You can take that paycheck and shove it up your ass!"
  • Third-Option Love Interest: Because Emily's a lesbian, Boo introduces her to Kylie, who is bisexual.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: As a result of her relationship with "bad boy" Chad, Talia's being ignoring a lot of her schoolwork.
