Recap / Carl S 4 E 5 Parents Evening

Go To

Principal Staffordshire hosts an event called "Parents' Evening" in order to talk to the students' parents about their grades and overall performance throught the school year. Meanwhile Grace is very worried about what Staffordshire might say to her father Felix.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: When talking to Linda and Calvin some days after Parents Evening, it looks like Calvin is reacting with disbelief over the fact that Felix hooked up with Staffordshire, but it is later revealed that he was only reacting to the fact that Felix had donated money to the poor. He then brings up the topic of him and Sydney going out together though.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: After Carl tells his friends that Grace's father and Staffordshire were making out in her office, Blooper says that it's the second episode in a row where someone has stood outside a door and seen something they shouldn't have.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Staffordshire casually mentions that she once gave a student detention because their shoes didn't match.
  • Doting Parent: Roxanne's parents brag about her high grades in front of Carl's, Boo's and Grace's parents. Calvin is irritated by it. After Staffordshire tells them that Roxanne is making a lot of progress in school, they reward her with some Goomburguer meals.
  • Extremely Protective Child: Grace isn't too fond of Staffordshire dating her father because the previous woman he dated left him after he bought her a brand new car. She and Carl then spy on Felix and Sydney's conversation and then backs down after seeing that Sydney genuinely loves Felix.
  • Heartbreak and Ice Cream: After learning that Staffordshire has a boyfriend, Coach Johnson goes home and cries while eating a bucket of ice cream.
  • Noodle Incident: Why did Staffordshire ban rap music from the school?
  • Pet the Dog: For how harsh she is, Staffordshire actually tells good things about the well-behaved students to their parents. In particular, she told Felix that Grace was a hard-working girl and that she has a bright future ahead of her.
  • It Runs in the Family: Oscar and Janie's parents are shown to be just as gossipy and addicted to their phones as their children are. Both of them are pretty much adult versions of them.
  • Teacher/Parent Romance: Grace's father and Principal Staffordshire begin dating
    • Dominik Bones attempts to flirt with Staffordshire during his interview with her. She immediately turns him down.
    • Nessa Squidd is shown dating Mr. Moore at the end of the episode.
  • Unfortunate Names: Carl mentions that Staffordshire once gave a student detention for using the word "dick". It would be understandable, if it wasn't because the student's name was "Dick".
Calvin: "Well, his parents should have picked a more appropiate name!"
