Recap / Captain Planet And The Planeteers S 3 E 3 The Deadly Glow

Go To

The Planeteers go to Korea when Gaia informs them that Duke Nukem is there to hunt for cesium, a highly radioactive isotope. Things become more complicated when two children, Su and Song, find the cesium and unknowingly play with it, contaminating themselves and the city. It's a race against time as the Planeteers must find the kids before Nukem does.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Kwame questions Mr. Nei about who released the cesium minutes ago. He insists he didn't do it as he never found the other capsule. Mr. Nei then realizes in horror that the only ones who could've done it are Su and Song since they always trespass on his scrapyard to take things.
  • From Bad to Worse: Su and Song not only unknowingly contaminate themselves with radiation, they contaminate their friends, and because they were running around, the cesium was also slowly breaking apart, contaminating every place they go through.
  • Ironic Nursery Rhyme: Duke Nukem references Jack and the Beanstalk while hunting the cesium piece.
Duke Nukem: Fee fi fo fum! I smell atomic cesium!
  • Nobody Calls Me "Chicken"!: Song is uneasy about sneaking into Mr. Nei's scrapyard, then Su calls him a scaredy-cat, which goads him into going in.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Duke Nukem grows increasingly more powerful the more cesium he absorbs.
  • Race Against Time: The Planeteers have eighteen minutes to find the contaminated kids before their contamination becomes fatal.
  • Shout-Out: Wheeler compares cesium to Nukem with spinach to Popeye.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Being naive kids, Su and Song play with the cesium thinking it's a "magic star", then show it to their friends. They wind up contaminating themselves as well as the rest of the city, completely unaware that their constant exposure to the cesium has given them literally minutes to live unless treated immediately. Su almost eats it out of curiosity which would've killed her immediately but was quickly stopped by Linka.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Mr. Nei's assistant disappears after escaping from Duke Nukem.
