Recap / Captain N The Game Master S 1 E 4 Videolympics

Go To

Mother Brain calls the N Team and instead of a battle, proposes a series of fair contests to settle who the ruler of Videoland will be. Unknown to the N Team, she's actually planning to use the games as a cover to send her minions to search for three artifacts of ultimate power without arousing suspicion.

The N Team emerges victorious in the final event, but by then Mother Brain has all three artifacts, and uses their power to banish the N Team to a warp from which no-one's ever escaped.

To Be Continued...

Was not based on Video Olympics.

Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: When Kid Icarus complains about having to wrestle the gigantic King Hippo. It turns out he's not in the event after all...the much more gigantic Donkey Kong is instead.
  • The Cameo: The scene at the Punch-Out!! gym has a quick cameo from the game's Warmup Boss Glass Joe, who, in typical form, gets knocked down by his own shadow. However, no other Punch-Out!! boxer (other than King Hippo) appears, as the rest of the people training their are Mother Brain's teammates or assorted other lackeys.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The inevitable result when it turns out Donkey Kong's competing for Mother Brain in the wrestling event. He wins immediately by sitting on Captain N and Kid Icarus, even leaving a giant butt-print in the ring.
  • Death Is a Slap on the Wrist: Mega Man explodes into chunks when Dr. Wily zaps him off a ladder, but respawns a minute later (with the N Team still losing that event). Doesn't seem to play into the usage of Video-Game Lives in the next episode, either, despite being a two-parter.
  • Easily-Distracted Referee: Despite the games having a huge crowd and judges, somehow nobody notices all the cheating Mother Brain's team does.
  • Land, Sea, Sky: The locations of the Three Sacred Treasures: underground, underwater, and in an unrevealed location during a flying chariot race.
  • Multi-Part Episode: The only one in the series.
  • Ordered to Cheat: When Mother Brain checks in on her team at the Punch-Out!! gym, she's frustrated that the lot of them are practicing sports.
Mother Brain: I didn't expect you to practice sports, I expected you to practice cheating, you hippopotamus head!
  • Pseudolympics: Some of the events are real (wrestling, weightlifting, diving), while some have more of a game-y twist on them (a maze of ladders and platforms with electrified gates, a flying chariot race, the platform diving event requires the divers to avoid airborne sharks...).
  • Raw Eggs Make You Stronger: Captain N tries this in the Training Montage. Everyone else runs away in disgust.
  • Rule of Three: The Three Sacred Treasures, found one at a time through the events, and when brought together give Mother Brain access to unlimited power.
  • Shot in the Ass: Kid Icarus brags he'll win the archery event, then promptly shoots Simon in the butt.
  • Training Montage: One shows up of the N Team getting in shape before the games.
  • Villain Team-Up: Donkey Kong competes on Mother Brain's team in this episode for some reason, when normally he's as hostile to them as anyone else.
