Recap / Camp Camp S 2 E 1 Cult Camp

Go To

Camp Camp gets a new counselor, Daniel, who seems to be just as chipper and optimistic as David (among other similarities). But is Daniel really as nice as he seems, or is there a secret he's hiding?

Tropes:

  • Adolf Hitlarious: The writers couldn't resist one more joke about Dolph. He gets his own gas chamber in this episode.
  • Body Horror: Daniel's truly unnatural neck movements.
  • Cassandra Truth: David does not believe Max, Neil, or Nikki when they tell him Daniel is a cultist.
  • Character Development: Max willingly submits to Daniel's brainwashing, trusting that if even he declares his love for Daniel, David will realize something's wrong and stop him. If his plan hadn't worked, Max would've drank poison punch along with all his friends. It took a phenomenal amount of trust in David to try that stunt.
  • Church of Happyology: Let's just say that Rooster Teeth was skating very close to a lawsuit in this episode.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Max walks out of the purification sauna smiling and declaring that he loves Daniel, David realizes that something is horribly wrong.
David: But... that can't be right. Max doesn't love anything!
  • Deadly Euphemism: When Daniel talks about "ascension," he's really talking about murdering children with poisoned Kool-Aid.
  • Hollywood Satanism: Jen shows some magazines with demonic pentagrams shown on its cover, scaring the campers.
  • Here We Go Again!: After Daniel has been sent away, Gwen returns and reveals that she's found his replacement— Jen, her own psychotic double.
  • Historical In-Joke: Of the Black Comedy variety; Quartermaster samples some of Daniel's Kool-Aid and concludes that Jonestown's was better.note
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Daniel gets so caught up in his Villain Song that he drinks his own poisoned punch. Even before then, when Daniel tosses Neil and Nikki into the purification sauna, he can't resist giving Max a nasty little speech about how playing on others' fears and weaknesses is the key to manipulating anyone. Max realizes he's right and exploits David's fear of being replaced to get him to fire Daniel.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": The other campers (except Space Kid) react this way when Jen shows up.
  • "No. Just… No" Reaction: Gwen's understandable response to seeing a doppelganger of David answer her ad.
  • Noodle Incident: Max has apparently lied about cultists in the past, which contributes to David not believing him about Daniel.
  • No-Sell: Quartermaster is completely unharmed by the poisoned Kool-Aid.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Max declares his love for Daniel, even David is forced to realize that something is seriously wrong.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Gwen obviously can't handle two Davids, so she immediately takes a day off when Daniel shows up.
  • Too Dumb to Live: David misunderstands all the obvious evidence that Daniel is a cultist trying to kill everyone, thinking they are just regular activities. Even when he wants Daniel gone at the end it is only to save his position, with him still not understanding the danger he possessed.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Max is willing to brainwash himself, and risk drinking poisoned punch, to save the other campers.
  • Unfortunate Implications: In-universe and lampshaded; Neil points out to Dolph the "Fucked up implications of specifically you putting specifically me into a gas chamber!"
  • Villain Song: Daniel proves capable of holding his own with David in a sing-off, and his verse is substantially darker than David's.

Prepare for the Killer Party

The brainwashed campers prepare Kool-Aid laced with rat poison at Daniel's behest. Quartermaster directly compares it to Jonestown.

How well does it match the trope?
