"Cold Reveal" is the 22nd episode of Season 3, and the 69th overall. It originally aired May 2, 2007.

Synopsis:

Det. Scotty Valens from Cold Case visits NYC to confront Stella about a case with ties to her. A man dressed as an angel is found dead in a church. Mac's career is in jeopardy following his solo encounter with Clay Dobson.

Tropes for the episode:

  • Accidental Suicide: An internet publicity stunt goes horribly wrong when the "angel's" catapult straps hold tighter than he intends.
  • Christianity is Catholic: The dead man is found by two altar boys sneaking around trying to find the communion wine in a Catholic church.
  • Intercontinuity Crossover: Cold Case is part of the "CSI-Verse."
  • Foster Kid: Stella is revealed to have spent part of her childhood in a foster home.
  • Icarus Allusion: The young man dressed up like an angel and attempted flight as a way of gaining internet fame.
  • Let Off by the Detective: Stella goes to visit her foster sister and, because of their relationship, tells her they'll be back the next day to arrest her. Naturally, the woman takes advantage of the warning.
  • Series Continuity Error: Stella told a suspect in "Til Death Do We Part" that she grew up in an orphanage, but she is revealed here to have lived in the foster home long enough to bond so closely with another girl that they became "blood sisters."
  • Sworn Brothers: Stella and her foster sister are revealed to have pricked their fingers to put blood into each other's necklace lockets.
  • Time-Shifted Actor: In flashbacks, Stella is portrayed at age 8 by Brenda Radding, and at age 14 by Cait Fairbanks.
  • Two-Faced: The opener is narrated by a pretty young blonde woman. Only the left side of her face is shown until the end of her statement, then she turns to reveal that the right side is horribly disfigured, and she begs for the madness to stop.
  • The Unreveal: The cause of the woman's facial disfigurement is never explained.
