"Crime and Misdemeanor" is the nineteenth episode of Season 1. It originally aired April 13, 2005.

Synopsis:

The Crime: the body of a young woman is found wrapped in a sheet at a laundry facility that handles linens from hotels all over the city. The Misdemeanor is revealed in a second case involving a dead homeless man. Danny gets himself in trouble with Mac over this one.

Tropes for the episode:

  • Beggar with a Signboard: Played for laughs. While investigating the homeless man's case, Danny and Aiden spot a guy with a cardboard sign which reads, "Why lie? I have a huge cell phone bill."
  • Determinator: Mac. When Flack snarks that there are "only" about 70,000 hotel rooms in NYC, he replies, "I'll take those odds."
  • Living Statue: The guy who commits the misdemeanor makes his living as a solid silver-painted statue in a park near a subway entrance/exit.
  • No Periods, Period: Averted. Blood is found in the mattress coils at the first scene. The man to whom the room is registered, who is obviously the first suspect, tells investigators, "Menstrual blood never bothered me," and that the woman left after they had sex.
  • The Sleepless: Mac. He and Stella are looking for evidence in the hotel room:
Stella: What do you do when you can't sleep?
    Mac: Work.
Stella: No, what do *normal* people do when they can't sleep?
[They flip the mattress and find the blood mentioned above.]
