"Tri-Borough" is the eleventh episode of Season 1. It originally aired January 5, 2005.

Synopsis:

As implied by the title, the team tackle three cases across the city: a young man found electrocuted in the subway, an art gallery owner found shot to death in his own establishment, and a construction worker who died from a blow to the head.

Tropes for the episode:

  • The Can Kicked Him: Twice. The victim's co-workers turn over the porta-potty he's sitting in; shortly thereafter, he gets conked on the head by a frozen chunk that falls from an airplane toilet.
  • Death from Above: The construction worker gets hit on the head by a chunk of "blue ice" that fell from a passing airplane's lavatory.
  • Disgusting Public Toilet: Flack insists that Aiden examine the porta-john since there might be evidence. She opens the door and is completely grossed out.
Aiden: Ewww, what do you guys *do* in here?!
Flack: I don't go in public.
  • Fictional Painting: The art gallery case centers around a fictional early-American painting called, Immortality by fictional artist Jacques de Suis. At first it is thought to be a forgery, but turns out to be real...something else *is* forged, however.
  • Le Parkour: The first victim is an avid participant in this urban sport. He and his friends video themselves making up new "courses" around the city. He also uses his climbing and jumping skills to evade his girlfriend's father while sneaking in and out of her second-story bedroom.
  • New York Is Only Manhattan: Averted, as the title suggests. The cases are in three different boroughs around NYC.
  • Overturned Outhouse: While using a porta-john, the construction worker gets rolled over shortly before his demise, partially explaining why he smells of excrement.
  • Remember the New Guy?: Det. Kaile Maka shows up out of the blue at Danny's crime scene, saying she's returning to full-time duty. Her story is that she had been shot in the arm, had a rod inserted and is now setting off metal detectors.
  • Sinister Subway: The first victim is briefly thought to have committed suicide by "third-rail exit," but Mac quickly realizes the positions of the young man's hands and feet rule this out, thus implying he was actually murdered.
