"Oceans Apart"

"You will know then which vow you have broken, and how we are to spend the rest of our lives, miserable together... or perfectly happy apart."
Daphne

Relations between Simon and Daphne have soured, but the scandal of Colin's failed engagement brings them back to London. Daphne secures an invite to the Queen's luncheon, hoping that the Hastings' favor will shield the Bridgertons from societal consequences. At the luncheon, Queen Charlotte presses Eloise for updates on the hunt for Lady Whistledown. Daphne also chaperones a meeting between Colin and Marina, where the latter explains her desperation; Daphne later suggests to Marina that she could locate Sir George Crane.

Lord Featherington proposes to Will Mondrich that he throw his next fight for a big payout. Daphne is invited to a soiree hosted by Lady Danbury for the married women of the ton, while Anthony confronts Simon about their marriage. Simon admits the vow he made on his father's deathbed to never sire a child, which offends her.

The Queen hosts a concert attended by the ton. Benedict speaks with Lord Granville, who reveals he's secretly seeing a man. Eloise tries to tell the queen that Lady Whistledown must be someone close enough to the Featheringtons to know of Marina's pregnancy, but Charlotte dismisses her, saying she's hired a team of Bow Street Runners instead. Benedict and Eloise depart early, but not before stopping to see Mme. Delacroix, Benedict's new mistress. At the concert, Daphne gets her period and breaks down in her mother's arms. Marina passes out after trying to abort her baby.

Tropes:

  • Analogy Backfire: Colin, still pining after Marina, cites the story of Hero and Leander. It's immediately pointed out that the romance was tragic.
Colin: Leander swam Abydos to Sestos every single night in complete darkness just to see his love.
Daphne: Leander also lost his way and drowned.
  • Awful Wedded Life: Ever since the marital rape scene, Simon and Daphne's married life deteriorates and they remain tense over this entire episode. For example: they start communicating through their servants despite they eat on the same table.
  • Breach of Promise of Marriage: According to Colin, if Marina had told him she needed to marry to avoid the scandal of her illegitimate child, he still would have stepped up. But she didn't, and now her pregnancy is public knowledge, and their engagement is ruined.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Violet gave Daphne a very ineffective version of The Talk, thus her daughter has absolutely no idea how getting pregnant actually works. In this episode Daphne later blames her mother for not preparing her adequately for married life.
