Recap / Bojack Horseman S 3 E 07 Stop The Presses

Go To

BoJack wants to cancel his newspaper subscription, so they get "The Closer" to talk him out of it.

Tropes:

  • Didn't Think This Through: BoJack takes a shine to a potential ad for Secretariat that's a mirror, telling whoever looks at it that they are Secretariat. At the end of the episode, it's turned into a billboard... a billboard that shows a reflection of the sky and will blind freeway drivers at sundown.
Princess Carolyn: It kinda just looks like a billboard for the sky.
Bojack: Yeah, I really didn't think this part through.
  • The Faceless: "The Closer" is only seen by her hands from the back of her chair.
  • Furry Reminder: The Closer pulls up BoJack's file and his information is listed as it would be for a horse; including listing his height in "hands", his parents as "sire" and "dam" and other things like his breed, marking, temperament and tack preference. Amusingly, none of it's favorable, from an equestrian perspective or otherwise.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog
    • When the Closer says something to BoJack that hits close to home for him, he claims he has somewhere else to be in order to avoid delving into an issue.
    • Similarly, when things are awkward between him, Emily, and Todd, he says he's going to go "watch a sport".
  • Insane Troll Logic: Margo Martindale says she participated in the Good Wife while laying low. When BoJack questions how she was able to appear in a nationally broadcast show while on the run, she simply says that she was able to disappear into the role.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Turtletaub openly admits that the biggest reason to make movies is the hopes of winning awards and making money. But he's not wrong about the importance of advertisement. When BoJack takes interest in a mirror ad saying "You Are Secretariat", he insists that there's no point in having the reader see themselves as the character, plus it's an overall bad ad for more than that reason.
  • Mysterious Middle Initial: BoJack's file on The Closer's computer shows that his full name is "Bojack F. Horseman".
  • Not So Above It All: Ana Spanikopita, despite the mysterious and terrifying persona she puts on in public, lives in a small downtown apartment, wearing sweats and eating instant mac and cheese.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: There are even flashbacks within flashbacks.
