Recap / Bob's Burgers S8E6 S8E7 "The Bleakening"

Go To

When a tree section with the kids' ornaments is stolen, the Belchers embark on a Christmas adventure to get it back.

  • All for Nothing: Teddy wastes his time disguising himself as a Santa Claus decoration, thinking he'll get stolen by the thief. On the other hand, he gets to "enjoy" hiding in a very tight space with Bob running from the cops.
  • Based on a Dream: Linda dreams that she threw a big Christmas party that saved the holidays, and decides to throw it in real life. Later, when Art confesses to stealing all the holiday decorations for the secret rave, he says that he had a similar dream and wanted to make the rave just like it.
  • Bookcase Passage: The stairway at the warehouse seems to lead to a dead end, until they discover another stairway hidden under the steps.
  • Brutal Honesty:
    • As they look for the kids, Linda sobs that it's her fault they're in danger. Rather than reassure her or downplay her involvement, Bob rather bluntly states that it is her fault.
    • The kids point-blank tell Linda that the underground rave was way better than her party. Linda tries to say that they were both good, which nobody believes.
  • The Bus Came Back: Dalton Crespin returns. Given the nature of his debut episode, this is the first time Dalton has been drawn using the show's usual style.
  • Captain Obvious: Louise is pretty mad that Bob and Linda followed them to the secret basement because of a "butt-dial" call Tina made "by accident," except Louise figured out immediately that Tina called them on purpose...and Tina still rants to her that she made the call even when it was made obvious already.
  • Christmas Episode
  • Concealing Canvas: To disguise the door, Art painted the wall to look like a path. Even after getting inside, Linda doesn't seem to get what her husband and kids figured out.
Linda: I get it, kind of. It's a mirror, right?
    Bob & Louise: No.
    Linda: It is!
  • Decoy Getaway: To lure the cops away from the secret rave, Bob dresses up as the Bleaken to lead them away.
  • Disappointed in You: Marshmallow has this vibe when she only shakes her head in annoyance when Bob does his usual "Oh hey, Marshmallow" greeting after Linda disrupts the rave. Then, after Art confesses to having stolen Linda's treetop and several other Christmas decorations for the rave, she openly voices her anger with him.
Marshmallow: And to think I gave you drugs.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything??: On the surface, "Twinkly Lights" reads as a vapid, aesthetic song about Christmas lights but quickly reveals itself as a queer empowerment anthem, enforced by the fact it's being sung by a drag queen to the former patrons of a closed down gay bar.
Miss Triple X-Mas: And when they wanna tell us that we're all wrong, I'm here to tell you that we're all lights!
  • Everyone Has Standards: The partygoers at the rave aren't happy with Art after he confesses to stealing the decorations for the party because he couldn't afford to pay for decorations.
  • Ho Yay: In-Universe, and it's not subtle at all. After Bob and Teddy manage to avoid the cops while hiding away inside the Santa Claus decoration, Teddy repeatedly shushes Bob so he can enjoy being together with him in the very little space they have (Bob brings up why not hide in Teddy's house, which still makes Teddy shush him). It's made even less subtle when Bob tries to leave and Teddy tells him not to ruin Christmas by doing so.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: When responding to Linda's call, Sergeant Bosco came as soon as possible... after he did some other stuff.
  • Intoxication Ensues: At the end, Linda is still partying on Christmas morning, saying that they gave her something at the rave.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Bosco is his usual gruff self, flicking water into the Belcher kids' faces to shoo them away, but considering the kids came to him to say a monster from a childhood story is responsible for thefts around town, his impatience is understood.
  • The Krampus: Teddy's story of the Bleaken is similar to Krampus, only instead of kidnapping children, he steals presents, and has black feathers. Teddy does claim that the Bleaken goes by different names in other countries, suggesting the Bleaken was inspired by (or even is) Krampus in-universe.
  • Musical Episode: The episode is a two-parter with about half-a-dozen songs.
  • Nobody Here but Us Statues: Teddy tries to catch the holiday thief by disguising himself as an inflatable Santa.
  • Noodle Incident: When citing how the year has been a bit of a downer, Linda mentions that an actor on a popular show died.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Marshmallow is so pissed that Linda called the cops on the party that she can't even greet Bob.
  • Police Are Useless: As usual, Sergeant Bosco doesn't take either Linda or the kids seriously and refuses to investigate the thefts any further, chalking it up to people being bigger bastards on the holidays. He also admits he was slow to respond to the Belchers' case because he was doing other stuff.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: The Belcher kids find one of Linda's ornaments with a trail of black feathers and assume they've found the Bleaken's lair and the stolen Christmas decorations. They were wrong about the warehouse being the Bleaken's lair, but in looking into the lair they did find the stolen decorations and the person responsible for the thefts.
  • Shoddy Shindig: Downplayed with Linda's Christmas party. It's not terrible terrible, but it's clear it's not as great as she thinks it is and the guests aren't really enjoying themselves or her eggnog (which Marshmallow flat out says is awful).
  • Shout-Out: Gene compares the painted wall to one that Wile E. Coyote would make.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Teddy hides Bob inside the Santa inflatable with him, and refuses to listen to Bob's suggestion that they just hide out inside of Teddy's house (which is right there and much less cramped than the inflatable).
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Art had a similar dream to Linda about a Christmas party that saved the holidays.
  • Subverted Catchphrase: After Linda reveals she called the police on the rave, Bob sees Marshmallow and says "Hey, Marshmallow." Unfortunately, she's so mad that she folds her arms and shakes her head.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Everyone in the rave makes this reaction when Linda reveals she called the police on them.
  • Younger than She Looks: Marshmallow offhandedly reveals she's 23.
