Recap / Bob's Burgers S4E18 "Ambergris"

Go To

The kids find some ambergris, a valuable but illegal bit of whale excrement, and try to find a buyer. Meanwhile, Bob and Linda meet Mr. Fischoder's oddball brother Felix, who offers to renovate their bathroom.

Troper-gris:

  • Accent Upon The Wrong Syllable: Felix emphasizes the second syllable of "bathroom" right before the unveiling.
  • Bad Boss: When Bob tries confronting Mr. Fischoder about his plumbing issue and asks him to fix it as a landlord should, Mr. Fischoder pretends he doesn't hear him before passing off the responsibility to his inept brother.
  • Brick Joke: At the start of the episode, Tina uses Buffy Speak to refer to the ambergris, leading Louise and Gene to think she's referring to the latter. At the end of the episode, a similar exchange occurs with the restaurant's new bathroom and Teddy substituting for the ambergris and Gene respectively.
  • Complexity Addiction: All Bob wanted was for Felix to call a plumber to fix the plumbing in the bathroom so the water didn't come out brown. Felix instead offers to remodel the whole bathroom, then plan an elaborate unveiling ceremony with a DJ and burlesque girls. Once the bathroom is unveiled, Felix realizes he never got around to have the plumbing fixed.
  • Dance Party Ending: The DJ that Felix hired tries to invoke one, playing a dance-themed remix of the main theme in the end credits. Linda and Teddy (and only those two) dance along in the background.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • Mickey was brought into the scheme since his criminal ties meant he'd be able to find someone to buy the ambergris. When he tells Louise he found one such buyer, he makes the mistake of telling her where to find him. This promptly gets him cut out of the deal, as Louise being able to reach "The Nose" on her own means she no longer has any reason to keep Mickey around (or so she thinks).
    • Louise goes to make the deal with The Nose alone. The Nose clarifies this and because she's a little girl and all alone, he only gives her $12 instead of the full $30,000.
    • Tina attempts to dump the ambergris in the water. As Gene points out when trying to stop her, ambergris can float. Louise, Mickey, and The Nose can be seen taking off their shoes to go swimming, hinting that they knew this.
  • Dissimile: "It's like instant gratification, but later!"
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: When Gene gets caught licking the ambergris, he tries to claim that the ambergris made the first move.
  • Especially Zoidberg:
Mickey: Pretty much everyone working at Wonder Wharf is a criminal.
Louise: Even Sally the snow cone lady?
Mickey: Are you kidding? Especially Sally the snow cone lady.
  • Eye Scream: This episode reveals the cause of Calvin Fischoeder's missing eye—Felix cut it out.
  • Eye Twitch: As her sanity goes down, the frequency of Louise's usual eye twitch goes into overdrive.
  • Failed a Spot Check: The Nose's name might as well be an Informed Attribute, because he somehow mistakes a cantaloupe wrapped in dirty socks for a lump of ambergris and doesn't realize the truth until he's got it in his hands. Had Louise brought Mickey to ensure he paid full price, he would've been conned out of 30 grand.
  • Fancy Toilet Awe: Felix installs ultramodern fixtures on the restaurant's bathroom, with a toilet that looks a lot like the sink. Bob is not impressed, especially since Felix never fixed the plumbing, which is what he was supposed to do in the first place.
  • Foreshadowing: When Louise goes to sell the ambergris alone, The Nose is seen working at a fried dough stand, setting up the ambergris's ultimate fate. For added foreshadowing points, from the fryer he pulls out a piece of fried dough that looks almost identical to the ambergris.
  • Funny Background Event: Everyone working at Wonder Wharf is a criminal. When Louise questions if that includes Sally, the snow cone lady. Mickey assures her that Sally is the near the top of the list, as the camera pans over to show her enthusiastically stabbing a block of ice with a pick.
  • Gold Fever: Louise becomes increasingly unhinged as she becomes obsessed with the money she could make selling the ambergris.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: The Nose's own fried dough stand winds up destroying the ambergris he so desires.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: Much like last episode, this episode would just be run-of-the-mill if not for a few small additions—namely, it sets up Felix Fischoeder for his much larger role in the Season 4 finale. It also makes a noticeable change to the restaurant bathroom, which keeps Felix's redesign for the rest of the series.
  • Kick the Dog: Mickey didn't even ask for that much of the money (just 10% as a finder's fee), making Louise cutting him from the deal more than a little cruel.
  • Late to the Punchline:
Mickey: You want to meet here and then we'll head over and see the Nose?
    Louise: Who's the Nose?
Mickey: That's my guy. He's got an amazing sense of smell. Oh, that's why they call him the Nose! I just got it.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Linda speaks for the audience when she notes that she was unaware Mr. Fischoeder had a brother.
  • Money Dumb: Felix's sudden debut is explained as him having blown through his half of the Fischoeders' inheritance and thus becoming financially dependent on Calvin.
  • Negative Continuity: Much like "The Equestranauts", it's averted hard. Felix's redesign for the restaurant bathroom remains there for the rest of the series.
  • Never My Fault: Linda refuses to acknowledge that Bob's getting progressively angrier because no one's actually repairing the bathroom and thinks he's just being a wet blanket.
Linda: I am getting so sick of your attitude.
  • Noodle Incident: Both courtesy of Felix.
  • The Nose Knows: Mickey's aptly-nicknamed criminal friend, The Nose.
  • Only Sane Man:
    • Bob throughout the subplot with Felix Fischoeder, and he grows increasingly pissed off at what Linda and Felix are doing to the bathroom when he repeatedly asks and then begs to just call a freaking plumber.
    • Tina in the main plot finds out that selling Ambergris is illegal and simply wants to turn it in to the authorities. She then pulls a Bait-and-Switch on Louise for the ambergris after seeing what the obsession is doing to Louise. Tina finally has to destroy the ambergris when she gets cornered by a manic Louise, Mickey, and "The Nose."
  • Parental Favoritism: Discussed; between Calvin and Felix Fischoeder, Felix was apparently their mother's favorite. Though given it's revealed as part of a song to cheer up Felix after a temper tantrum, the truth of this claim is dubious.
  • Sanity Slippage: Louise goes full blown nuts as greed over the ambergris and sleep deprivation drive her batty.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Both plotlines. Tina tosses the ambergris into a deep fryer preventing anyone from making money off of it, and Felix goes through the whole bathroom renovation only to reveal the actual plumbing still isn't fixed.
  • Shown Their Work: Everything this episode reveals about ambergris—from ambergris and eggs being Charles II of England's favorite meal to ambergris being illegal to sell in the United States because whales are endangered—is quite accurate.
  • Stolen MacGuffin Reveal: Louise has the ambergris taped to her back so she can take it to The Nose without arousing suspicion. Only when she gets there and The Nose takes it do they find out that Tina had it switched with a cantaloupe and some dirty socks.
  • Stunned Silence: After Tina destroys the ambergris, all Mickey, the Nose, and Louise can do is stare with a downcast expression at the scene of its destruction, clearly reeling from the loss of such a valuable item that had only been so close only seconds ago.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Right before the bathroom unveiling, Bob makes it not-at-all-subtle that he believes it's going to end very poorly.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Gene thinks this about Louise after her Sanity Slippage. He then backtracks and adds "sorta".
  • Wacky Cravings: Gene becomes obsessed with eating the ambergris after hearing that Charles II of England used to eat it with eggs.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: When the kids refer to the ambergris heist as One Last Job, Mickey concludes that he'll either end up dead or arrested at the end of it. This being a low-stakes comedy show instead of a heist movie, he concludes wrong.
