"TA DANCE"

"Don't mix romance with magic"
—Theme song

Tina tries her best to be an assistant to Jimmy Jr. for his magic act. But when he tires of Tina's meddling and dumps her in favor of Tammy, Tina plots revenge. Meanwhile, Bob earns the wrath of an arrogant magician, whose sleight of hand inspires Louise to try and teach herself pick-pocketing.

Presto Trope-o:

  • Awesome McCoolname: Bob lampshades that "Mars Sazerac" is a very magicky name.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Bob's plotline. By the end of the episode, Mars Sazerac has gotten away without any karma for all the jerkish things he does to Bob.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Tina's plotline. She and Jimmy Jr. don't win the grand prize, but they get a $50 consolation prize for best onstage chemistry.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Jimmy Jr. decides to be a magician for the episode, but mostly uses his stage presence to show off his dance moves, to Tina's annoyance as his assistant, since he leaves her waiting on him in the props.
  • Dark Horse Victory: The grand prize goes not to Tina and Jimmy Jr., but Peter Pescadero (who hadn't appeared in the episode a single time before being announced as the winner).
  • Epic Fail:
    • Tina trying to staple the pockets in Jimmy Jr's cape, missing completely and stapling herself to her siblings.
    • Bob's revenge plan (see Out-Gambitted below).
  • Evil Laugh: Tina does one once she gets the Dirty Tricks magic book, except it sounds pretty weird (i.e. not an actual evil laugh) to Louise.
  • Fat Bastard: Mars Sazerac is fairly obese, and though he tries to present himself as a nice guy he's quite the asshole: he and the rest of the magicians abuse Bob's 50% discount for magicians, but the only thing any of them order is a single plate of fries split between all of them. After they've taken up all the seats for hours and they haven't even finished the fries, Bob finally kicks them out and cancels the discount, causing Mars to add his name to a book containing a list of people who're "enemies of magic" as well as "cursing" him, causing his restaurant to somehow have weird magician-based mishaps for the rest of the day, such as a bill he pulls out of his register to give back as change somehow having a string of handkerchiefs tied to its corner.
  • Foreshadowing: Sazerac pickpocketing Bob for a trick, which understandably distresses him, is probably a sign he's not very considerate of others.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The trick where Sazerac cuts the deck of cards in half and hides Bob's card in his wallet is less impressive when one takes a closer look and notices that his deck has two Jacks of Diamonds (the card Bob had) as well as two 5's of Spades (the fake-out card Sazerac initially displayed).
  • Given Name Reveal: Though it was easily inferred, this episode confirms Jimmy Pesto Sr. and Jimmy Pesto Jr. are named James.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Subverted. Louise initially learns to pickpocket because Mars Sazerac pickpocketed Bob's wallet as a magic trick, and she uses this to steal Sazerac's book from his pocket. However, Sazerac planned for this and let her do it.
  • Jerkass Ball: Jimmy Jr. really doesn't treat Tina all that great in this episode, ranging from dismissive to outright rude. To his credit, he seems to realize it by the end.
  • Karma Houdini: Mars Sazerac gets away with all the magical abuse he inflicts on Bob, despite Bob trying to punish him enough.
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All: Jimmy Jr. gets defensive when Tina tries to help him improve his magic act, even though it's obvious his act isn't very good and is mostly an excuse to showcase his dance moves.
  • Levitating a Lady: Jimmy Jr. asks Tina to be his magic assistant. She has an Imagine Spot that she is part of a floating woman trick and levitates to his face so they can kiss each other.
  • "Metaphor" Is My Middle Name: Tina says the usual "danger is my middle name" line. Her actual middle name is revealed in this episode to be Ruth.
  • Noodle Implements: Louise points out that one of the revenge plans in Tina's book would require "eight weeks, twenty-five rabbits and a fireman's hose."
  • Noodle Incident: Both courtesy of Zeke.
    • Zeke's parents apparently divorced when he was a baby, because he has a memory of appearing in divorce court in diapers.
    • Zeke has a 44 year-old brother (almost certainly a paternal half-brother given the sheer age gap).
    • The clerk at the magic shop tells Tina not to mix magic with romance... as well as not to mix it with taxes and plumbing.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: This episode confirms Jimmy Jr.'s real first name is James, which by proxy confirms Jimmy Pesto Sr. is also named James. Coupled with "Burger Wars" revealing the Pestos' surname is really Poplopovich, this makes their full names James Poplopovich Sr. and James Poplopovich Jr.—which absolutely nobody calls them over the course of the series.
  • Out-Gambitted: Bob tries to get even with Mars Sazerac, one of the magicians, for relentlessly pranking him by tearing his page out of Sazerac's book of "magicians' enemies" and licking the cold cuts in his room. It turns out Sazerac anticipated Bob would try to sabotage his cold cut tray, and farted on the meat in advance.
  • Riddle for the Ages: How exactly Sazerac pulled off his "curse" on Bob. Unlike South Park or a Seth MacFarlane show, Bob's Burgers is grounded in reality, albeit with ageless Comic-Book Time characters. Descends into downright horrifying territory when you realize the most likely scenario is that Sazerac was able to break into the restaurant undetected, leaving no trace behind. Good thing he only decided on harmless pranks...
  • Spoof Aesop: After Bob's attempt to get revenge on Mars Sazerac backfires, Linda says "I hope you learned your lesson, Bob, don't lick meat!" Gene disagrees.
  • Taking Advantage of Generosity: Mars and his magician buddies exploit Bob's offered discount by ordering one play of fries and splitting it between them, occupying the whole restaurant in the meantime.
  • Try Everything: Tina mentions having tried a couple thousand combinations before managing to open Jimmy Jr.'s locker.
  • Twin Telepathy: When Louise tries to steal a candy bar from Andy's pocket, Ollie is apparently able to feel it. Not see it or hear it, feel it.
Gene: Get a womb, you wacky twins!
  • Un Evil Laugh: Tina's attempt at an Evil Laugh makes Louise think she just has something caught in her throat.
