Anagram for: "Suspect everyone"

  • Big Brother Is Watching: Operation Daylight is a project to make use of all of that data the NSA collects on everyone.
  • Broken Pedestal: Mayfair is standing on one, as far as Weller is concerned, thanks to her participation in Daylight.
  • Doing In the Wizard: Jane wonders aloud how it is remotely possible whoever tattooed her would be able to predict the murder of the two cops, which would seem to indicate precognition or time travel. The tattoo didn't predict the murders: instead of the reticle of a gunsight, it was the reticle of a camera viewfinder, indicating the bodycam footage blackmail.
  • Forced Out of the Closet: The football player is being blackmailed using a video of him with another man. He makes it out of the episode with his secret known only by Weller's team and one remaining conspirator.
  • Government Conspiracy:
    • Operation Daylight, of course.
    • Also, the cops at the 65th Precinct who are using body camera footage for blackmail purposes.
  • He Knows Too Much: Averted with the slain officer's widow—she really doesn't know anything, but one conspirator plans on killing her anyway.
  • I Never Said It Was Poison: How the precinct captain incriminates himself—Mayfair never mentioned to him what secret the football player was being blackmailed over.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: Varma and Mayfair, especially in the flashbacks to when they were together, when Mayfair wore her hair longer.
  • My God, What Have I Done?
  • Revealing Cover-Up: Mayfair "laundered" the intelligence produced by Daylight by sourcing it to her confidential informant Guerrero. The secret was revealed when Weller arrested Guerrero in "Sent on Tour", and Weller realized during the interrogation that Guerrero and Mayfair didn't actually know each other.
  • Ripped from the Headlines:
    • The situation in the 65th Precinct (police shooting an unarmed black male, apparent revenge killings of cops) is reminiscent of real life events in New York City, Baltimore, and Ferguson, Missouri.
    • Operation Daylight was shut down after an Edward Snowden Expy publicized the NSA surveillance used by the operation.
    • The use of the stored bodycam footage reflects concerns that have been raised over what happens to footage when bodycams become more common.
  • Spurned into Suicide: When the existence of Daylight's information source is made public, Varma proposes to Mayfair that they move to Hong Kong to avoid extradition. When Mayfair chooses instead to stay on the job and try to mitigate the damage, Varma takes her own life.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: three of them, actually: Mayfair, Varma, and Carter.
