Recap / Big Hero 6 The Series S 2 E 10 Lie Detector

Go To

Hiro turns Baymax into a lie detector in an effort to expose Liv Amara.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: The Cold Open has Big Hero 6 chasing after a monster that looks like the Kentucky Kaiju wreaking havoc all over the city. It turns out to be Fred in a costume, as part of a training exercise.
  • Bears Are Bad News: Liv mixes bear DNA (which she gets from Chris fighting one and getting some of its fur) and combines it with Bessie to create a meteorite-bear hybrid to get the gold she needs. The combination of the bear's savage nature and Bessie's Walking Techbane properties make it a formidable opponent for Big Hero 6.
  • Brutal Honesty: Everyone lies to Fred about his terrible hat except GoGo, who simply tells him "No."
  • Danger Room Cold Open: The episode opens with the rest of the heroes hunting down Fred in disguise as the Kentucky Kaiju for a training exercise.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Chris making muffins with gold flakes as a topping gives Liv the idea to incorporate gold into her cure.
  • Exact Words: Liv tells Hiro that "Liv Amara" is not responsible for the monsters (rather than "I am not responsible for the monsters"), which Baymax determines to be the truth. This is because the real Liv Amara is being kept in stasis because of an unidentified disease, while the Liv Amara we know is evidently a twin or clone of some kind.
  • Eye Lights Out: This happens to the Bessie monster when Baymax sucker-punches it. Unfortunately, it gets back up a few moments later.
  • Hybrid Monster: Liv combines bear DNA with Bessie the meteor to make a tech-nullifying bear.
  • Living Lie Detector: Baymax can read body language to determine when people are lying. Hiro upgrades this function to have a handy beep/ding response on his chest screen.
  • Look Behind You: Mr. Sparkles pulls this on Hiro, GoGo and Baymax. Despite the latter having his lie detector upgrade, this works long enough for Mr. Sparkles to get his Mayoi to start dropping shipping containers on them.
  • Metronomic Man Mashing: The Bessie monster does this to Fred. Thankfully he's wearing the Ultra Armor.
  • Newspaper-Thin Disguise: Hiro and Baymax spy on Amara and follow her into a restaurant where they bury their noses in menu to avoid being noticed and looking suspicious. Because there is nothing suspicious about a robot reading a menu.
  • Playing Possum: Baymax fakes being hit by the Bessie monster's anti-tech beam so he can get a surprise attack in. He learned this from Hiro, who told him that people lie so as to spare others from being hurt.
  • Recognition Failure: Mr. Sparkles is annoyed that the cargo ship captain has no idea who he is.
  • The Reveal: The "Liv Amara" we all know is not the real Liv Amara...
  • Rock Monster: By using bear DNA, Liv Amara turns Bessie into a glowing rock-bear.
  • Third-Person Person: Subverted when Liv tells Hiro that "Liv Amara" is not responsible for the monsters. That statement foreshadows the reveal she's not the real Liv Amara.
  • Wham Shot: The woman in the pod is the real Liv Amara.
