Recap / Big Finish Doctor Who TDA S2 E1 "Infamy of the Zaross"

Go To

Jackie’s plans to catch up with an old friend in Norwich are interrupted by an alien invasion, but when the Doctor and Rose are called in to help, it soon becomes clear that this is an alien invasion with a difference; this one is staged as a television show.

  • Arc Words: The audio is set during Series 2, and has an appearance by Torchwood near the end.
  • Attention Whore: Jess is so desperate to be famous that's she's willing to be killed for it. It gets deconstructed as a combination of the TV constantly telling her that being famous is the same as being important, and her mother constantly telling her that she's a failure. Rose talks her down from it.
  • Berserk Button: The Doctor was already angry that the ‘Zaross’ were invading planets for a television show, but upon learning that the humans are given fake guns while the Zaross weapons are genuine, he makes it clear that he is beyond furious now.
  • Continuity Nod: Marge mentions that Rose "[ran] away for a bit" as she had disappeared for a year with the Ninth Doctor (although it was only a few days for her).
    • At the end, The Doctor offered to take Rose to The Land of Fiction, which Rose politely declined.
  • Immoral Reality Show: Take Me to Your Leader, a staged alien invasion that really kills people.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: The Teaser ends with the producer of Take Me to Your Leader saying "And cue titles!"
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Rose delivers an epic one to Marge Ellmore regarding her treatment of Jess.
  • Pre Ass Kicking One Liner: A Doctor variation of it, anyway, as he disables their equipment rather than starting a fight;
    Doctor: Did someone order an alien nemesis with a side-order of rice? Well, I’ve got bad news for you; they’re all out of rice.
  • Saying Too Much: Albeit to different people; the Zaross had told the Doctor that they were on their third season, but when Jackie reveals that the show’s producers mentioned that this was the show’s tenth season, this gives the Doctor a vital clue as to what he’s dealing with.
  • Timey-Wimey Ball: A minor example; after Jackie leaves a message on Rose’s answering machine, the Doctor and Rose reveal that they arrived a few minutes ago and parked the TARDIS in a bedroom until Jackie made the call.
  • The Un-Favorite: Marge Ellmore is constantly comparing Jess to her sister who's at university.
  • Who Would Want to Watch Us?: The Doctor's last line, regarding the producer's offer to him, is "It would never have worked anyway. I mean, who wants to watch a TV show about me?"
