The newest cover for it's standalone release.
An old man goes to a museum to think. He is Kalendorf, the greatest Knight of Velyshaa, and he's come to the museum to look at the exhibition of the Dalek invasion and remember his lost friends, when he's joined by another man, a younger man he doesn't recognise but who seems to know exactly who Kalendorf is. He even says they've met before, on Zaleria, or rather Spiridon. The younger man has a problem, and he wants Kalendorf's opinion - if you could destroy the Daleks irrevocably, but at the cost of everything you loved, would you do it?

Meanwhile, one of the dead Daleks on display isn't quite as dead as everyone thinks...

Tropes in this story:

  • And I Must Scream: The Dalek has been trapped inside its shell for years, and for much of that time, its only sensation was pain.
  • Forever War: Kalendorf believes the war against the Daleks will be eternal, and the Doctor's starting to come around to that way of thinking too.
  • Genocide Dilemma: The Doctor and Kalendorf discuss the fact that the last time the Doctor was faced with the choice of wiping out the Daleks before they ever existed, he didn't take it. And now he's starting to wonder if he chose wrongly.
  • Riddle for the Ages: We never do learn who the Dalek chose to kill, either the Doctor or Kalendorf.
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: The story works as a small post-script to Dalek Empire, showing what happened to Kalendorf in the years immediately following the Great Catastrophe.
