Recap / Beverly Hills 90210 S 01 E 10 Isnt It Romantic

Go To

Brandon and Dylan hang out at the Walsh house, where Brenda and Dylan flirt. He invites her along to the cinema with him and Brandon, and they all hang out afterwards at Dylan's hotel room. When Brandon gets sick, Brenda and Dylan go to the movies just the two of them. Jim is unhappy as Dylan's father is a notorious con man, but they're allowed to go. After Dylan gets in a fight with his father, he is vulnerable with Brenda and they share a passionate kiss. They start dating and Brenda considers having sex, but then Dylan stands her up. She is devastated and Brandon is furious and confronts Dylan. Dylan goes to see Brenda to apologise and explains that he was helping his dad flee the country to avoid prosecution, and they make up. Meanwhile, Steve pretends to be a teacher and flirts with a guest speaker, until he learns that she is sick and apologises for having been forward as he didn't want to offend. She takes learning he is actually a high schooler calmly, and thanks him for his kindness.

Tropes

  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Brenda's initial interest in Dylan is his mysterious reputation.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Brenda calls Jim on his sexist double standard.
  • Chekhov's Classroom: Justified. After attending a seminar at school on safe sex and AIDS, Brenda asks Dylan to get tested.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Jim judges Dylan by his criminal father… and the earring.
  • Double Standard: Jim barely blinked when Brandon was gonna have sex for the first time, but is outraged that Brenda even considers sex at 16, which Brenda calls him out on.
  • Hypocrite: Scott is banned by his parents from attending a school seminar on sex. David points out the irony.
David: Well, what kind of message are you getting at home? Your mom has six kids.
  • Fanservice: Dylan in the shower.
  • Official Couple: Brenda and Dylan have a whirlwind romance and start dating.
  • Parental Neglect: Dylan's father is a crooked businessman who is practically never home and when he is, focuses on work. Dylan gets into a screaming match with him at the hotel.
  • Shower of Awkward: Brenda thinks Brandon's in the shower fogging up her room, so she yells at him in typical sibling fashion, walking into the bathroom as Dylan draws the curtain, smoulders at her and says an emphatically flirtatious, teasing ‘sorry’. Brenda’s mouth drops. As does her gaze.
  • Stood Up: For their second date, Dylan doesn’t show.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: Steve hovers around this trope as he pretends to be a young teacher and hits on a guest lecturer who is in her 20s. When she realises at the assembly that he’s a student, she no longer shows romantic interest in him.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Both Brenda and Brandon call Dylan out for bailing on Brenda, though they forgive him after he tells them why.
Dylan: Somehow I'm always apologising to you Walsh people.
