Station Under Investigation: Barwood Road

Tony's marriage begins to fall apart as he investigates a complaint of sexual harassment by a WPC against a Black sergeant.

Provides examples of:

  • Best Served Cold: Harry jokes with Deakin that Drake should have dealt with Tate's complaint by promising her whatever she wanted and then retaliating against her further down the line.
  • Black Is Bigger in Bed: When one of the other officers at Barwood Road hears about Tate's complaint, he jokes that "maybe he's got something special in his pants that frightened the life out of her."
  • Blaming the Victim: The female officer who sits in on Tate's initial interview doesn't hesitate to let Tate know how unsympathetic she is to her to decision to make a formal complaint about Jones.
  • Category Traitor: Drake claims that Jones was "playing both sides of the street" by encouraging Black members of the public to complain about the treatment they received from officers at Barwood Road.
  • Dreadlock Rasta: Tony walks past a man with dreadlocks trying to make a complaint about how he's been treated by the officers at Barwood only to get fobbed off by the desk sergeant.
  • Flawless Token: Subverted in a particularly messy example. At first, Jones seems like a model officer who's being set up for a false allegation of sexual assault, but then he admits that everything Tate accused him of doing in her initial complaint was true.
  • Gaslighting: Tony repeatedly lies to Sue when she starts to suspect that he's cheating on her again.
  • God: The unseen Commissioner of the Met is referred to as such. He's never seen or explicitly identified in the show.
  • Framing the Guilty Party: Deakin is of the opinion that Drake should have dealt with Tate's complaint unofficially rather than feeding it up the chain to CIB, but since Drake's real motive was to get Jones out of his station, not actively dissuading Tate from making a complaint served his interests.
  • Karma Houdini: Drake manages to get what he wanted, which was to force Jones out of Barwood Road with no negative consequences for himself.
  • Minority Police Officer: Drake insinuates that Jones' Workaholic ways are a symptom of him feeling the need to prove himself as the only Black officer in the station.
  • My Local:
    • Tony tries and fails to meet up with Jenny for lunch at a pub called The Swan.
    • Mo meets up with Tate at a pub called "The Europa".
  • Profiling: A local doctor asks Jones for advice about being harassed by police for driving his own car to see a patient on an emergency house call.
  • Revenge: Drake's motive for encouraging Tate to make a formal complaint against Jones.
  • Shout-Out:
    • "Is There Something I Should Know" by Duran Duran plays the first time Harry goes to see Butler.
    • "Jealous Guy" by Bryan Ferry plays when Sue runs into Mo at the sports club.
  • Smug Snake: Drake blithely tells Tony at the start of the investigation that he's handed Tate's complaint to CIB so that they can the ones who take the blame when it inevitably goes pear-shaped.
  • Toplessness from the Back: Tony pulls Jenny's shirt off her when the two of them start snogging on her couch.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: While Tony and Mo investigate Jones, Harry's off dealing with a reluctant witness in the case against Inspector Pinkney.
