Recap / Beast Wars S 3 E 9 Crossing The Rubicon

Go To

Blackarachnia's life is put on the line after she experiments with the Transmetal Driver, and Tarantulas seizes the opportunity to gain his revenge against his creation.

Tropes featured:

  • Accidental Hero: Rampage intervenes before Silverbolt can kill Tarantulas, not out of concern for the spider but just because he can't wait to have some sadistic fun.
  • Back from the Dead: Blackarachnia gets revived by the Transmetal Drive after being dead for several minutes.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Upon easily subduing Silverbolt, Rampage remarks this wasn't as fun as he was hoping it would be. Transmetal 2 Blackarachnia proceeds to give Rampage a challenge, one he can't overcome.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Silverbolt goes into a murderous rage when he thinks Blackarachnia was killed during the Predacon assault.
  • Came Back Strong: After being dead for a short while, Blackarachnia gets revived as a Transmetal 2 Maximal and gets to deliver a thorough ass-kicking unto Rampage, who had Silverbolt at his mercy.
  • Crazy-Prepared: When he placed a shell program in Blackarachinia, Tarantulas installed both "certain safeguards" and a signal to alert his computer to any possible tampering.
  • Disney Death: It looks like Blackarachnia has perished thanks to the Predacon assault on the base, but the Transmetal Driver not only brings her back to life, it also transforms her into a Transmetal 2.
  • Due to the Dead: With Blackarachnia (temporarily) dead, the other Maximals speak well of her (even Rattrap).
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: When called out for her secret experiment, Blackarachnia says she wanted more power and openly doubts a bunch of Maximals would've helped her achieve that. Optimus scolds her for this, saying she's part of the team no matter what her faction is.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Partway into the mourning, Rattrap notices Silverbolt isn't there. Optimus goes through this when realizing where Silverbolt went.
  • Foreshadowing: Megatron is pleased that Blackarachnia has transferred the access codes for the Ark to Optimus, as it fits nicely with what he has planned for him.
  • Godzilla Threshold: The Maximals and Blackarachnia would never attempt to remove her Predacon shell programming, as the procedure is incredibly risky and Blackarachnia is proud to be a Predacon. But when the alternative is having her core consciousness completely deteriorate, everyone is willing to go through with the procedure.
  • Hoist Hero over Head: Inverted. After beating Tarantulas, Silverbolt attempts to kill the villain by lifting him over his head before slamming him onto a spear.
  • Hope Spot: Just as Rhinox is about to take out the last Restraining Bolt, a large missile hit briefly disrupts the system at the worst possible time.
  • Humiliation Conga: After he nearly kills Blackarachnia, Tarantulas is nearly killed by Silverbolt. Rampage prevents Tarantulas from being killed, but Silverbolt still uses him as a human shield against Rampage's missile.
  • Impact Silhouette: Rampage leaves one after Blackarachnia tosses him into a mountainside.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: This was how Silverbolt intended to finish off an unconscious Tarantulas before Rampage intervened.
  • Internal Reveal: The rest of the Maximals learn that Blackarachnia "borrowed" the Transmetal Driver a few episodes back.
  • Late to the Realization: As the group mourns Blackarachnia, Rattrap suddenly notices that Silverbolt isn't there.
  • Never Say "Die": Justified. Heading for Tarantulas, Silverbolt noticeably hesitates before referring to Blackarachnia as dead, simply using "gone" instead. He just can't bring himself to say it outright.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When Silverbolt believes that Blackarachnia has died, he hunts down Tarantulas and attempts to murder him in cold blood.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Silverbolt is crushed when Blackarachnia flatlines. After a quiet moment, he then realizes who exactly is responsible for this and becomes enraged.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Silverbolt briefly when he decides to go after Tarantulas.
  • Restraining Bolt: It's revealed that Tarantulas installed security measures inside Blackarachnia that will wipe her consciousness if anyone tried to remove her shell-programming.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Silverbolt goes on one against Tarantulas. Rampage comments on how unheroic the act is.
  • Sadist: Rampage observes Silverbolt take on Tarantulas and mourn Blackarachnia.
Rampage: Ah, such pain. I must help deepen it.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Silverbolt says he's always seen love in Blackarachnia, not evil.
Blackarachnia: Sappy as always. What did I ever see in you, anyway? Oh, yeah, I remember.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Furious over Blackarachnia's Disney Death, Silverbolt goes after Tarantulas and nearly kills him.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Blackarachnia so much so that she curb-stomps Rampage for trying to kill Silverbolt.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Optimus chastises Blackarachnia for risking her life like this and not trusting the team.
    • Rampage is more amused then anything but he does point out Silverbolt attempting to finish off the defeated Tarantulas isn't very Maximal.
  • The Worf Effect: Blackarachnia's Transmetal 2 form is able to overpower Rampage (with her bare claws, no less) and fling him off to the distance. This demonstrates the extra power she hoped to gain as a Transmetal.
