Recap / Batwoman 2019 S 3 E 4 Antifreeze

Go To

Ryan has trouble dealing with being the CEO of Wayne Enterprises, especially when Marquis starts to meddle in things further. Sophie's sister ends up frozen by a recreation of Mr. Freeze's formula, so she and Alice try to find the culprit and save her. Luke has to deal with the failsafe, while Mary tries to figure out what happened to her.

Tropes:

  • Ask a Stupid Question...: When Mary has her "Eureka!" Moment.
Mary: Animals never evolved to withstand freezing, but plants have organic material that's perfectly adapted to freezing and thawing. And they survive winter by synthesizing a type of antifreeze inside their vascular tissue. The key is to thaw from the inside, not the outside.
Luke: And you think this could be a way to safely unfreeze Jordan?
Mary: No. I just thought it was a fun fact about plants!
  • Big Damn Heroes: Ryan saves Alice and Sophie from being blown up by freezing the flames with the Freeze Gun.
  • Brutal Honesty: The A.I. bluntly tells Luke that he is not ready to wear the suit.
  • The Bus Came Back: Sophie’s sister Jordan returns in this episode.
  • Captain Oblivious: Mary was snagged by vines and dragged into the bushes right in front of Nora and her sister last episode, yet neither apparently noticed this nor did they call Ryan, Sophie, or the police. Likewise, Mary seems to have forgotten the incident by the time she wakes up in the woods the next morning, with the only reminder being a thorn embedded in her skin.
  • Composite Character: The Black Glove in the comics were a cult obsessed with human sacrifice. The whole Man Behind the Man business is more appropriate to the Court of Owls.
  • Continuity Nod: A.R.G.U.S. helps Ryan to cover up the diverted funds, claiming it to be a secret military project. Luke makes a reference to John Diggle being involved.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Sophie obviously enjoys seeing Ryan in her dress.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Charlie Clarke believes Bruce diverted funds from his company due to being an Upper-Class Twit.
  • Evil Is Petty: Despite knowing that Ryan only just recently became Wayne Enterprises CEO, Jada Jet smears her for diverting funds (which was done by Bruce to finance Batman).
  • Foreshadowing: Mary begins growing plants in her clinic, and seems almost fixated when she compares Jordan's frozen body to wood and studies a plant to safely thaw her.
  • Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: Ryan cannot understand how her own mother could be out to destroy her.
  • Harmless Freezing: Played with. Jordan will rapidly age like Nora if she's thawed out normally, but once Mary figures out the right solution, she's no worse for wear. Totally averted in the case of Jordan's associate. The first victim we see gets shattered, the other one is reduced to a puddle of bloody goo once thawed.
  • Imaginary Friend: Alice has illusions of an Arkham guard throughout the episode.
  • Neck Snap: How Alice "kills" the imaginary guard.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Mary refuses to blurt out the details of her abduction the previous night, so Ryan, Luke, and Sophie end up ignoring her for more pressing matters.
  • Red Herring: Luke suspects Marquis to be part of Black Glove.
  • Shipper on Deck: Jordan for Sophie and Ryan.
  • Shout-Out: The imaginary guard makes a Title Drop to You've Got Mail when delivering Alice the imaginary mail from Jacob.
  • Spotting the Thread: Once more it is Alice who gives the team a valuable hint, this time regarding the Black Glove Society being behind the attack on Jordan.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • Ryan, like Bruce and Kate before her, has been redirecting Wayne Enterprises funds for Batwoman operations. When the news breaks, it looks to everyone else like she is embezzling from her own company, leading to the stock in Wayne Enterprises to fall and Ryan under investigation as she naturally can't tell anyone what the money is for.
      • As this happens, the press worker figures Ryan isn't behind it as she's so new... but that it was Bruce Wayne, and his sudden disappearance only adds to the suspicion he was behind it.
      • Despite a press release claiming the money was for a defense contract, Ryan is told that the board wants her to resign or risk Wayne Enterprises going down.
    • Despite still being angry with Mary throughout the episode, Luke is forced to acknowledge in the end that a super-suit and some self-defense lessons do not make him ready to go into crime-fighting compared to trained soldiers and martial artists like Kate and Ryan.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Between Sophie and Alice, and in the end, Sophie is even forced to act as a guardian for Alice.
  • Villain Ball: The enforcers knock out Sophie and Alice, but instead of simply shooting them, or even setting the apartment ablaze right then and there, they tie the two up back-to-back and create an elaborate timer for their deaths, giving Batwoman enough time to save them.
  • Wham Shot: Jada is working together with the Black Glove Society and seemingly plans to freeze her own son.
