Recap / Batwoman 2019 S 3 E 3 Freeze

Go To

Canisters of Mr. Freeze's compressed liquid nitrogen are being sought by an unknown party, while Ryan deals with meeting her half-brother for the first time.

Tropes:

  • Big Damn Heroes: Batwing manages to rescue Batwoman before the latter dies from hypothermia.
  • Cliffhanger: One of Poison Ivy's vines grabs Mary and drags her into the bushes.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • While the character's past was retconned, the younger version of Nora shown on the Batcomputer is still portrayed by Cassandra Amell, who played her in Elseworlds.
    • Shortly after, Luke name-drops Captain Cold, saying he wasn't really a captain.
    • Luke says that Nora Fries broke out of Arkham 3 years ago, aka during Elseworlds.
    • Alice mentions her escape from the Crows using fishing line.
  • Conspicuous CG: The explosion at the bridge is... not very good.
  • Death Seeker: Nora is sick of being kept alive artificially, which is why she is not afraid of Alice threatening to kill her. At the end of the episode, she takes off her respiratory equipment, wanting to breathe with her own lungs and then planning to finally let go.
  • Dual Wielding: The head mercenary fights with two batons.
  • Everyone Can See It: Alice teases Mary about her obvious crush on Luke.
  • Freeze Ray: Despite the episode focusing on the former Mr. Freeze, this doesn't actually come into play until near the end, when Batwing uses Mr. Freeze's ice gun to create a makeshift bridge after a bomb blew it up.
  • Get It Over With: Nora makes it clear to Mary and Alice that she doesn't really care if she dies, since she realizes she has limited time anyway.
  • Harmless Freezing: Discarding anything involving the cryo-stasis, Batwoman comes within seconds of dying from hypothermia, but is right as rain, even driving the Batmobile, a few minutes later after being rescued.
  • Hostage Situation: Alice tries to threaten Nora's life so Mary will take the nanites out of her, but Nora defuses that threat by daring her to do it, since she's not long for this world anyway.
  • Human Popsicle: What happened to Nora 20 years ago and what the mercenaries attempt to recreate.
  • Idle Rich: Subverted. Marquis comes off as this, since he is the Executive Vice President but wears standard clothes any young black man would wear, but he soon makes it clear that he is good at his job and is eager to get to know his long-lost sister.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Mary tells Ryan about Luke's PTSD.
    • Ryan tells Luke and Mary that Jada is her mother.
  • Is This Thing Still On?: When Luke and Ryan are bickering about the latter flirting with Sophie, Sophie has to remind them that their coms are still active and she heard every word they said.
  • Karma Houdini: The mercenaries escape with Victor Fries's notes.
  • Locked in a Freezer: When Batwoman is placed in the cryo-chamber, the mercs plan to activate the freezing mechanism without Victor Fries' special solution, which would freeze her to death instead of putting her in suspended animation.
  • Mission Control: Sophie takes over this role while Batwoman and Batwing are out stopping the mercenaries.
  • My Beloved Smother: Ryan reveals to Sophie that she wishes she could have experienced this from her birth mother, though oddly implying her foster mother didn't do this either.
  • Mythology Gag: Nora's backstory is more or less the same as in Batman & Robin.
    • Nora's sister, Dee, is likely named after Dee Hartford, who played Mr. Freeze's would-be wife, Miss Iceland in the 60's show.
  • Nepotism: Marquis is the Executive Vice President of his mother's company. In a twist, he's fully aware of his situation and actually dislikes it, because his mother has essentially locked him out of advancement until she keels over or decides to resign, hence why he approaches his sister with an offer to work together.
  • No Name Given: Jennifer Garcia's character is simply listed as "Head Mercenary" in the credits.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Batwing is riding in the Batmobile when the bridge is destroyed. We never see him exit the car, but once Batwoman starts driving to the destroyed remnants, Batwing suddenly appears flying in the air to freeze the broken sections and make an ice bridge.
  • People Jars: The cryo-chamber is essentially this, and Batwoman gets trapped inside at one point.
  • Playing Sick: Alice does this, unconvincingly, to try and get Luke and/or Mary to take the nanobots out of her system.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: The head mercenary is able to give Ryan more trouble than her underlings, though only slightly.
  • Rapid Aging: Nora Fries was kept in suspended animation for twenty years and never aged a day, but in a mere three she's become an old woman from the side effects of the process.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • Alice gives a small one to Mary, telling her that Luke and Ryan only care about Mary when they need medical help.
    • Sophie gives one to Ryan about trusting the Bat-team over her in order to keep her awake until Luke rescues her.
  • Rich Sibling, Poor Sibling: While Marquis had his share of hardship, he was still raised by his natural mother and lived a charmed life. Meanwhile, Ryan was abandoned by the same mother and lived in perpetual poverty until becoming Batwoman.
  • Sadist: The head mercenary has obvious pleasure watching Ryan slowly freeze.
  • Sanity Slippage: Alice complains about feeling off throughout the episode, blaming it on the nanobots. At the end of the episode, she hallucinates small bugs crawling all around her skin, making her wonder exactly what is wrong with her.
  • Ship Tease: Luke calls out Ryan for flirting with Sophie while on the way to rescue Nora's sister Dee.
  • Spotting the Thread: Marquis figured out Ryan was his sister by himself.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Alice gets sent back to Arkham after taking Nora hostage and threatening Mary.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Nora feels sorry for Alice.
  • Threat Backfire: Alice is completely annoyed when Nora openly says to just go ahead and kill her as she's dying anyway and tired of folks sacrificing for her.
Alice: So you want me to kill you? Could you be a worse hostage?
  • Throwing Down the Gauntlet: Batwoman challenges the leader of the group to a melee battle, which she initially obliges. However, soon her henchmen arrive and Batwoman is overwhelmed.
  • Traveling at the Speed of Plot: Luke is able to get suited up in his Batwing outfit, travel to the mercs' hideout, beat up some henchmen, and save Batwoman in less than 10 minutes.
  • The Unfavorite: Even after coming clean, Jada makes it clear that Ryan is this compared to her brother Marquis. In fact, she's using Ryan as an excuse to try and merge and absorb Wayne Enterprises.
  • You're Insane!: Sophie is incredulous when Batwoman decides to attempt to drive over the destroyed bridge, somehow not picking up Batwing flying off to the side in order to use a Freeze Canister.
