Recap / Batman Wayne Family Adventures Episode 27 Big Brother Part 1

Go To

Dick cancels plans with Tim at the last minute when Damian asks him to take him to the museum to do homework. Tim tries to just let it go despite it bothering him, but Dick asks and learns just how much Tim has taken to heart the many times he gets left by the wayside when other things come up. Dick feels guilty about it, and Tim is upset he made such a big deal when he knows that homework and helping people take priority to just hanging out. Dick reschedules his plans with Tim after a talk with Jason and makes sure that nothing short of an emergency will interrupt this time.

Tropes

  • Book Ends: The two-parter begins and ends with Dick and Tim planning to go to the arcade together. The first time, it's cancelled when Dick's Chronic Hero Syndrome gets in the way. The last time, Dick promises that nothing short of a mass breakout at Arkham will disrupt things.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Presented as Dick's biggest problem. He can't help stopping what he's doing and helping people whenever something comes up. While this is acknowledged as being a positive trait, it's also shown that it leaves him little time to do anything with his family, something that especially wounds Tim.
  • Color-Coded Secret Identity: Dick wears a blue shirt, calling to mind his Nightwing uniform, while Tim brings a red jacket calling to mind his Red Robin uniform. Jason's red hoodie and leather jacket combo are a near dead ringer for his Red Hood uniform.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: Jason eavesdropped on Tim and Stephanie, letting him know why Dick is moping the next day.
  • Hey, That's My Line!: Jason starts his pep talk by snarking that he's the angsty member of the Bat-family, so Dick needs to cut out the brooding.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Jason, in his own way, gives Dick some good advice about helping others while still connecting with his family.
  • Multi-Part Episode: "Big Brother" is split into two parts, making up episodes 27 and 28.
  • Platonic Declaration of Love: Tim tells Dick (his adoptive big brother) that everyone, including Tim himself, loves Dick for his big heart, but sometimes it gets exasperating.
  • Tsundere: A platonic example; Jason claims that he "might have" eavesdropped on Tim venting to Steph about Dick cancelling his plans to go to the arcade together, that he's only out on the balcony where Dick is because he's avoiding Bruce, and that he's too busy to help out to take the load off of Dick when it comes to his Chronic Hero Syndrome. Dick sees right through it.
