Recap / Arrested Development S1E11 "Public Relations"

Go To

After a series of negative publicity, Michael hires a female publicist for the family, but she turns against them when he decides they shouldn't date in the interest of George Michael.

The Arrested Development episode "Public Relations" provides examples of:

  • Actor Allusion:
Jessie: Daddy lost his shot at happy and it's all your fault Opie!
Narrator: Jessie had gone too far, and she had best watch her mouth.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: The events of this episode would have never happened if George-Michael has stated his true feelings about attending the school his father was interested in enrolling him in, and if he had expressed how he really felt about him dating Jessie. Michael lampshades this at the end of the episode.
  • Disappearing Box: GOB's Aztec Tomb is used for his retirement home charity show. GOB hid Earl Milford in the tomb and Earl used the chance to escape the nursing home.
  • Double-Meaning Title: Michael has relations (sex) with a public relations manager while also having a public relationship with her.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Lucille and Lindsay may frequently complain about and harass Michael at every given opportunity, but they absolutely refuse to stand for Jessie smearing him in the papers, and promptly start a Bar Brawl with her in retaliation.
  • Food Fight: Between Jessie and Lucille/Lindsay at the restaurant towards the end. Apparently, it developed into a full-blown Bar Brawl.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus:
    • When we see the newspaper article on the fight at the restaurant, one of the other stories reads "Rock Star Sues Restaurant Over Use Of Name". This is a reference to the band Arrested Development suing the network over the show's title.
    • The second shot of the article about womanizer Michael has a story about a bum getting a balloon.
  • Oh, Crap!: Jessie's expression when Michael stops protecting her from an enraged Lucile and Lindsay.
  • Quote Mine: Gob made it all too easy.
  • Wallpaper Camouflage: Buster wears clothes to match the living room's wallpaper. Because Milford men are neither seen nor heard.
  • Woman Scorned: Jessie. Or is it Psycho Ex-Girlfriend?
