Recap / Archer S 1 E 4 Killing Utne

Go To

Malory hosts a dinner party for the UN intelligence chairman, Torvald Utne, in an effort to get a new weapons contract for ISIS. Unfortunately, a group of rival assassins have targeted Mr. Utne for elimination.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Big "WHAT?!": On the subject of Fister Roboto.
Pam: Tell him about the sexbot!
    Utne: The what?!
    Malory: Yes, the— WHAT?!
  • Blatant Lies:
    Malory: There's no... scheme-hatchery!
  • Carpet-Rolled Corpse: Suggested by Woodhouse, but quickly shot down by Malory.
Woodhouse: I shall fetch a rug!
Malory: You most certainly will not! That was a gift from the Azeri Khan himself!
  • Dirty Old Man: In Malory's words, Utne is a "notorious poon-hound". Sure enough, he's introduced trying to cop a feel with Lana, and later on he falls for Elke's hilariously obvious flattery.
  • Disposing of a Body: When Utne, as well as Archer's escort (who was another KGB agent hired to kill Utne), are both killed, Malory decides to have her agents to this in her rival/neighbor's own bathroom, setting it up as a hooker murder-suicide. Off-screen, no less.
  • Establishing Character Moment: For Krieger. He was The Voiceless for the first three episodes, and his first lines in the series are him talking about his sexbot, Fister Roboto.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: It looks like that's how the episode ends, but it keeps going for a little Crosses the Line Twice dark humor from Cheryl.
Cheryl: I thought we were laughing at the dead people we set on fire.
  • Fake Assassination: Malory hired a couple to pose as assassins and perform this on Utne. It is revealed a moment later that they are actual assassins hired by the KGB to kill him for real.
  • Gambit Pileup: Malory hires a German assassin couple to help her fake an assassination attempt on Utne to curry favor for ISIS via Engineered Heroics, unaware that her KGB-leading boyfriend has instructed the assassins to actually kill him. The situation is further complicated by Sterling’s fake date for the event being another KGB assassin on the same mission as the couple and competing with them to kill Utne.
  • Inherently Funny Words: Kladdkaka sets off an "Everybody Laughs" Ending... kind of.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Malory and her odd practice of switching medicine labels, so her servants won't steal them, when they allegedly can't read English. She's oddly oblivious to the whole fallacy of it.
  • Kill It with Fire: What ends up happening to the bodies of Torvald Utne and Elke Hubsch after the dinner party.
  • No, You
Archer: Okay, I'm gonna leave you to think about that whole line of reasoning-
    Malory: You think about it!
  • One-Steve Limit: There's apparently an Olympic shot-putter named Torvald Utne, who Archer at first confuses with the UN official.
  • Red Baron: Elke Hubsch, aka The Needle.
  • The Rival: Elke Hubsch to Manny and Uta.
  • Russian Roulette: A flashback shows Sterling in the aftermath of one, but he uses the gun on his captors.
Archer (holding a revolver, sitting in a room of dead Asians after a game of Russian Roulette): Oh my God... I can’t believe they fell for that!
  • Shout-Out: to R.E.M.
    Nikolai: What is the frequency?
    Archer: Kenneth?
  • Shown Their Work: All the foods mentioned are quite real; Gravlax is cured salmon, Jansson's Temptation is a potato, onion and anchovy bake while Kladdkaka is a sticky chocolate cake. Incidently, all of these foods are Swedish and so, presumably, is Utne.
  • Verbing Nouny: It's that kind of title.
