"It's the Mark of the Huntsclan. It assures me
that I was born to do one thing: Slay dragons!"

Feeling confident in their growing relationship, Jake decides that the next step is to tell Rose about his identity as a dragon. At a school-sponsored ski trip, he runs into the Huntsgirl and learns that she must be a fellow student. And although Jake doesn't want to admit it, both his love interest and his arch-enemy may be closer than he could hope...

Tropes

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Brad is this to Rose for his unbearably cheesy pick-up lines and simply because Rose would rather spend time with Jake than with him. By the end of the episode, Brad becomes this in general when his cold chases away a couple of girls he tries to sweet talk.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Trixie rants to Spud how Jake is still in denial about Rose being Huntsgirl and might get himself killed over it. Spud said he's worried too, which Trixie doesn't deny.
Trixie: You know what? Forget him! Let him fend for himself out in the snow with a blizzard and a ninja.
Spud: I'm worried about him too.
  • Almost Kiss: In the cold opening, Jake and Rose are about to kiss when Rose is called away for, according to Jake, "Aerobics". If Trixie and Spud's comments are to be believed, this has happened several times before due to either Rose's activities or Jake's dragon duties.
  • Amazon Chaser: Jake and Spud are both highly impressed by Rose's intense workout regimen.
  • Amusing Injuries / Humiliation Conga / Iron Butt Monkey: Professor Rotwood spends the whole episode getting either trampled, knocked down the stairs, or crushed resulting in him being in a full body cast by the end of the episode.
  • Awful Truth: After spending half the episode in denial, Jake is forced to accept that Rose, the girl he's been crushing on and developing a relationship with, is actually Huntsgirl, his arch-nemesis sworn to destroy him.
  • Call-Back: During the flashback sequence at the end of the episode, Jake and Rose moments from "Old School Training", "Dragon Breath", "Act 4, Scene 15", "Body Guard Duty", and even the beginning of this episode are shown with sad music playing over them.
  • Cargo Ship: In-universe, Spud falls in love with the Ski-Lift and spends most of the subplot trying to ride it. He "breaks up with it" at the end of the episode.
  • Cerebus Syndrome: With its Downer Ending, this episode marks the point where things start feeling progressively more hopeless for Jake and Rose and serves as the point where the show turns into more of a comedy-drama.
  • Downer Ending: Jake finally learns about Rose's identity as the Huntsgirl, and is not only heartbroken over it, but coldly breaks off their relationship.
  • Dramatic Unmask: Played with. When the Huntsgirl is incapacitated, Jake is highly tempted to pull off her mask to learn her identity. But since he doesn't know if he can truly handle the truth directly, he does the next best thing: pull off her glove to reveal Rose's dragon birthmark.
  • Hair-Trigger Avalanche: Right after Jake learns that she's Huntsgirl at the end of the episode, Rose accidentally causes an avalanche with her battle cry when she tries to kill him. Cue her going Oh, Crap! and Jake swooping in and catching her after she's swept off a cliff.
  • If You're So Evil, Eat This Kitten!: Rose calls the Huntsman to report that she captured a yeti, and he can send the Huntsclan to finish the job. Huntsman retorts that she's grown old enough for him to expect her to make her own kills, and should she not find the willpower to bring herself to skin the yeti personally, she shouldn't bother returning to base at all.
  • Internal Reveal: Jake learns that Rose is Huntsgirl, something the audience was already aware of.
  • Lampshade Hanging:
    • Spud says near the beginning of the episode that he's growing tired of Jake and Rose's repeated Almost Kisses.
    • When Spud dresses up as a leprechaun so the trio can trap Huntsgirl, Trixie questions why Jake had the costume on hand in the first place. Jake just says he overpacked.
  • Manly Tears: Attempted by Brad to prove to Rose how sensitive he's become, but he can only manage to force a single drop from his eye after substantial effort.
  • The Masquerade Will Kill Your Dating Life: While not ruined yet, Jake becomes frustrated that his relationship with Rose can't develop because he's always being forced to cut things short when he's needed as the American Dragon. He concludes that he has to reveal his dragon nature to her if he wants things to move forward. The Reveal of Rose being Huntsgirl is what puts a stop to things, though.
  • Mood Whiplash: After Jake refuses Rose a seat next to him on the bus, the last scene of the episode is Spud having finally mastered the ski-lift, only to "break up" with it after he falls off.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: When Trixie starts to offer up the theory that Rose is the Huntsgirl, Jake gets suspicious and accuses that Trixie could be the Huntsgirl instead. If anything, this shows that Jake is in so much denial of his beloved crush ever being his arch-nemesis, he'd rather believe she's one of his close friends.
  • Roses Are Red: Spud does this many times.
  • Running Gag: Rotwood repeatedly getting injured.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: When Jake considers telling Rose that he is a dragon, Trixie sarcastically asks if Jake will slip a Valentine under her door. Spud responds by giving suggestions and a poem.
  • Save the Villain: Having just learned that Rose is Huntsgirl, Jake saves her from an avalanche.
Rose: Why did you save me? We're mortal enemies! Or did you forget?
    Jake: I wish I could...
  • Selective Obliviousness: Jake refuses to see the hints that Rose is Huntsgirl. As said by Spud, "Denial, party of one, your table is ready!" He even goes as far as to accuse Trixie of being Huntsgirl.
  • Ski-Resort Episode: The episode involves Jake's class going to a ski resort.
  • Trainee from Hell: Professor Rotwood is hit by this, quite literally when Rose throws a boy at him. While he's already hurt from that time when the students ran over him while he tried to distribute ski passes. That having said, his attitude of continuing to supervise the trip with several broken bones instead of admitting he‘s hurt and should go to the hospital leads to quite a lot more accidents for him.
  • Wham Episode: Jake discovers that Rose is the Huntsgirl in this episode.
