Recap / American Dad S 8 E 3 A Ward Show

Go To

Roger becomes Steve's legal guardian and drives a wedge into his friendship with Principal Lewis. Meanwhile, Stan and Francine take a child-free trip to a water park.

Tropes:

  • Comically Missing the Point: Roger finally accepts that he has to let Steve do his own things, even when Steve is screaming that Lewis wants to kill them both.
  • Cycle of Revenge: The teachers manhandle Steve as revenge for terrorizing them alongside Principal Lewis. Roger, upon hearing this, kills them by planting explosives in their cars.
  • Deconstructed Trope: The B-Plot features what is described as the largest water park in the universe, and it subsequently pokes holes in the whole "amazing playpark setting". Whilst it is very large, it's still a finite area with a limited number of water rides, with an oxymoronic factor being it's also so large, there's plenty of stuff for other people to do, preventing long lines. Thus Stan and Francine run out of things to do in technically an hour, also due in part to the fun nature of the park allowing them to run, and having overestimated how long they'd want to stay, are stuck there for several days due to their passes. This ends up driving them up the wall and they try to "get even" with the park, which only gets them hurt.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Steve is able to use his friendship with Lewis to have the other teachers do what he wants. After Lewis is fired, they immediately begin shoving Steve around.
  • Humiliation Conga: Steve gets manhandled by the teachers, then gets injured alongside Principal Lewis at the Grand Canyon. While brutal, Steve deserved it for being such a smug, whiny prick throughout the episode.
  • Jerkass Ball: Steve uses his "friendship" with Principal Lewis to terrorize the faculty members. He also gives Roger a hard time, even though the latter is actually going out of his way to support him for once.
  • Knight Templar Parent: Roger is this in spades, from giving Steve an "approved friend" to blowing up the teachers after they beat him up.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Steve gets assaulted by the teachers he harassed alongside Principal Lewis, then gets injured alongside Lewis after ignoring Roger's warnings and being such a hard-ass toward him for no good reason.
  • Spinning Clock Hands: Stan and Francine run into Flash Flood Acres once it opens. Then the camera pans up to show a clock advancing just under two hours, and it's revealed that the two have already done everything at the park.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: Francine tells Steve that they wanted to intervene in his friendship with Lewis, but were worried he would say they were lovers.

10 Bucks to See It

Principal Lewis offers his prices to a driving woman, but doesn't elaborate on what "seeing it" means until the service has already been paid for.
