Tropes

  • Batman Gambit:
    • Stan turns out to have faked being immobilized in order to test the Smiths on how they would do without him. They failed.
    • Roger posed as the delinquent students' new teacher, got Steve to fire him, guilt-tripped Steve into getting him rehired, and gained the students' trust... all to humiliate Steve by making him look like an idiot as payback for calling him selfish. He also has the students sent to the Chinese military after he was done.
  • Big Eater: Roger was able to eat all of Steve's chocolates within only less than an hour.
  • Can't Take Criticism: Roger bursts into tears after Steve calls him selfish, then humiliates him by using him in his scheme.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Roger made Steve a pawn in his scheme and made him look like an idiot all because Steve called him selfish (after Roger ate all Steve's chocolates, no less).
  • Dustbin School: The section of the school where Principal Lewis has Steve sent to, where all the students are total delinquents.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Roger actually seems to have the students' best interests at heart and becomes the first person to reach out to them. Unfortunately, he has them all sent to the Chinese military because he already gained their trust just to prove Steve wrong.
  • Kick the Dog: Roger has all the students to the Chinese military after he regained their trust.
  • Literal-Minded: Steve tells Roger that the latter doesn't have a single good bone in his body. Roger thinks he's referring to his actual bones.
  • Moral Myopia: Roger callously eats all the chocolates Steve planned to give to charity, yet he has the nerve to be offended when Steve calls him selfish.
  • Never Learned to Read: According to Principal Lewis, none of the delinquent students could read. Roger exploits this later on.
Steve: (nervously) Can they read lips?
Principal Lewis: They can't read books!
  • Shout-Out: To Boyz n the Hood, when Ricky (one of the students) gets shot and killed in the hallway.
  • Teen Pregnancy: Implied with the students in the remedial class when Principal Lewis claims their own children have apparently given up on them.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: To Stand and Deliver. Roger even mimics the appearance of Edward James Olmos in the film.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: After finally having gained the trust of the students, Roger has them all sent to the Chinese military.
