Recap / Almost Human S1 E4 "The Bends"

Go To

An old cop friend of Detective John Kennex's goes undercover, posing as a "cook" of a highly addictive street drug called "The Bends." But his cover is blown. As the scope of the intense drug investigation unfolds, a determined Kennex and Dorian call on Rudy Lom for assistance.

Provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Aggressive Negotiations: When John and Dorian try to pry the information on Rudy's location from one of the bad guys, who was shot in the leg, Dorian ends up sticking his finger in the bullet wound to get him to talk.
  • Ascended Fanboy: Rudy is clearly shivering with delight to be able to be a real spy for once. He even sees himself as a Bond expy in the mirror.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The captain of the other precinct, Barros, turns out to be the drug-dealing "Bishop."
  • Crazy-Prepared: Barros was actually too prepared. The fact that the Bishop had a countermeasure for a brand-new police technology clued everyone in that he had to be a high-ranking officer himself.
  • Decapitation Required: When Dorian manages to get the upper hand on the much stronger VX, it is a hook-n-chain noose that was its downfall.
  • Eat That: Dorian tricks John into eating a live...slug...thingy...by arranging with the chef in Japanese to serve him something unusual while he's bound by Japanese manners to clean his plate.
  • Properly Paranoid: John's friend went undercover on his own, which is against procedure and understandably raised suspicions of him being a dirty cop who tried to cover his ass by claiming to be undercover. The reason he did this is he suspected the drug dealers had an inside man at the police department, which turns out to be correct.
